History
November 23
Alula’s early years of education had varying results, despite her mother’s best efforts at times to promote academics in her daughter’s life. Comments such as “she’s bright... if only she would apply herself” were common for many years. They were proven right when Alula decided she wanted to go to college and managed to graduate on the honour roll, all while still doing theatre and band.
Her hard work was all to be able to get a scholarship to go to college in Ireland, where she earned her honours degree in Folklore. She had thought to continue her education, more out of impulse than ambition, but ultimately did not when her father got sick. Occasionally she gets permission to sit in on lectures at the university her mother teaches at, just out of interest.
Alula was born into what most would consider a less than ordinary family, with one mother and three fathers, all four a polyamorous family unit. The young girl’s life was the sort filled with dozens of aunts and uncles that were not related by blood, but no less family for it. Much of her parents’ biological family, on the other hand, was not present in their life, either due to disapproval or other circumstances. The main exception was her maternal grandparents, while they had initially been apprehensive of their daughter’s choices, when Alula was born they tried to put aside their differences as not to lose their only daughter and granddaughter. In fact, the relationship grew so strong that even when her family did not live in Newfoundland, Alula would go to visit her grandparents every summer.
It was early in her life that Alula discovered her passion for music. While some parents struggled to get their children to practice their lessons, Lu’s family had a hard time keeping up with her ambition to conquer nearly every instrument she could get her hands in. This also led to her involvement in community musical theatre and school bands. These communities made it easy for Alula to make friends when she moved, an occurrence that happened twice. The first move due to a work opportunity for her mother, the second to be closer to their grandparents. Her charisma didn’t hurt the pursuit to make friends wherever she went either.
It was a surprise to most people when she didn’t pursue a career or degree in music, instead determined to go to Ireland, the birthplace of her grandfather, and study folklore. Admittedly, she took a particular interest in folk music but studied every aspect of her degree with vigour. Her childhood had been tilled with tales from not only her grandfather, but anybody else she could get to tell her stories, and that had stayed with Alula through the rest of her life.
She cancelled plans to return to Ireland when one of her father’s got sick, choosing to be close to home. Not wanting her family to feel guilty she did something she rarely did and lied by claiming she wasn’t accepted into the program of her choice. Even though there was every chance they could have seen through it, they never protested. This was a choice she didn’t regret, valuing the time by her father’s side before his eventual passing and the proper time to mourn with the rest of her family.
The time off made Alula question what she really wanted from her life and what her goals were. Musician, professor like her mother, something else entirely? She had no idea and spent much of the following time travelling sporadically, playing music, attending the odd lecture, but never seeking a proper career. As much as she craved a place, it always felt like there was something more out there and she remained optimistic she would find it. Perhaps that is why when a mysterious key came into her possession, it became a small obsession for Alula to seek what it might unlock.
