Kanata is the only child of a single father household. He was born in New York, but his mother died during birth due to complications. His father had to travel for work and was born oversees as a result. He spent most of his childhood in the United States up until beginning high school when his father was called back to Japan. He was childhood friends with Ritsuka Ogasawara while he was in the US and they made a promise to meet again in the future. The Kobayashis moved permanently with family in Niigata and he continued his education starting the third year of middle school.
His father tended to collect instruments despite the fact that he didn't play them. He would eventually begin picking up the instruments and teaching himself to play. He started with guitar with the help of Ritsuka Ogasawara.

In his first year of high school, he was scouted to be a part of an oshare-kei/idol hybrid band as a bassist despite his skill at the guitar. There was a rocky relationship with the manager and producer of the group resulting in him leaving in the middle of a tour a few months after their debut. The band gradually rearranged their line up until none of the original members remained a few short months after he left.
