It doesn’t cause any adverse psychological effects, other than maybe becoming insane through watching yourself become overcome with fungus.
The electrical activity within the brain will start to malfunction eventually, and it doesn’t stop until the fungus consumes enough of the brain and/or nervous system to shut it down.

Do they have hardened black growths coming off them? If the answer is yes, then they have it.
If they are coughing up blood, and the colour is slightly darker than normal, then they probably have it.
