Overview
Reiyane Atale
The country that False Prophet takes place on
Country
Culture
500,000
Most of the population is made up of Reiyane Atalans, people who are native to the island and whose families have lived there for generations. The common phenotype is medium brown skin, black wavy hair, angular dark eyes, and rounder faces and bodies. However, since Reiyane Atale is a major trade port, there is a lot of genetic diversity and a large portion of the population are different races from across the world.
Monarchy. The crown currently belongs to the royal Maveryn family, who is supported and advised by five noble families, the Alyamoras, the Vyurs, the Khavilises, the Kyrals, and the Fyrtains. Each of the families is believed to be descended from a different Orazistic god, thereby giving them the divine right to rule. The Astezas, the monarch from the Maveryn family, is advised by their court. Although lords and ladies of the court may have some say in political decisions and sway the Astezas' opinion, it is ultimately the Astezas who makes the final call and whose word is taken above all others. Many court members have to compete to be favored by the powerful and therefore have more influence over the country. The royal court is also made up of many other people who aren't of noble blood, but are still of rich and high ranking backgrounds, such as foreign ambassadors, successful merchant families, and prestigious artists. The order of succession for royal titles is an absolute cognatic primogeniture (ooo big fancy words), meaning the eldest child becomes the next heir regardless of gender.
Reiyane Atale has lived in mostly peace for years, so they don't have a very expansive military. Still, there is an official guard that watches over cities and deals with enforcing the law.
Being surrounded by ocean, Reiyane Atale has a very strong navy. The few attempts other countries have made at conquering Reiyane Atale were swiftly destroyed, the Reiyane Atalans being much more adept at nautical combat and able to defend their islands.
The lowest ranking of people are the Nameless, people who have been banished from their family and no longer have a family name. They are frequently discriminated against, making it hard for them to find jobs and homes. Above that are the lower class people, mostly fishers, farmers, and other poor paying jobs. The middle class is made up of merchants, artisans, scholars, priests, and business owners. The upper class is the royal court.
The most common religion is Orazism, a polytheistic religion centering around Nalyta, queen goddess of the sea. A lot of the religion is also built around prophecy, and prophets are sometimes viewed as religious figures and frequently take place in religious rites. There is a god of prophecy named Eialres, and it is believed he is the one who blesses prophets with hints of the future, so he is greatly worshiped. Being so centered around family, one's ancestors are also greatly valued, and Orazists must maintain constant connections with the graves of their deceased family to keep a constant connection to the afterlife so their ancestor's spirits don't drift away.
Above all else, a Reiyane Atalan's blood family is their greatest ideal. The image of a perfect life is to conform by society's rules and therefore bring pride to the family.
While there have been some efforts to increase education, it is still greatly reserved to upper and middle classes. A significant portion of the population is still illiterate, and many lower class people go without a proper education.
There is only one form of magic in this world, the art of prophecy. Reiyane Atale has extremely positive views of prophecy, it being extremely ingrained into their society. Many of their revered figures are prophets.
The technology in use in Reiyane Atale is similar to that of real world technology in the late 1890's to early 1900's. The telephone, electricity, and automobile are all relatively new inventions. These are also all greatly restricted to the upper class. Printed newspapers are a relatively new way to spread information and is slowly becoming more used around the country.
Reiyane Atale has a pretty strong understanding of medicine. Even earlier, doctors understood quite well how disease was spread and how best to prevent it. Almost every village has a doctor, while cities may have several. Medicine is also greatly connected to prophecy, as many of the sick and injured frequent prophets to get advise on how to treat their condition and if there is any hope for them.
People usually live in quite large family units, often having groups of siblings, parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins living together for their entire lives. When a child comes of age, they usually do not move out unless they marry into another family.
It is expected that once married, the partner that comes from a lower status will move into the home of the higher status partner.
Sexuality and gender are very fluid and a wide variety of identities are accepted. Same-sex attraction is common and a significant portion of the population could be seen as identifying as bisexual. Transgender and non-binary people are welcomed and many have access to the technologies to transition. There are not the same gender roles and concepts such as fashion and what jobs a person can take on are viewed through a gender neutral lens.
