Thunia
More commonly referred to as The Fey Grove, this is one of the most mysterious nations in Erzara. Shrouded in expansive magical forests full of unknown beasts, much of it has been uncharted by outside nations, even though it is such a tiny nation. Many fey creatures claim it as their homeland, but none are more present than elves. A majority of Erzara's elves have no connection with the Fey Grove, and those who live in the nation believe themselves to be the only true elves, claiming all others to be a bastardized version of perfection. They work very closely with the magical nature of the Fey Grove, morphing and warping wood over centuries to create sprawling treetop cities. They are quite the sight to see, though very few visit willingly. This is due to extreme xenophobia elves feel towards other races, sometimes even other elvish races. Many of the citizens will outright refuse to talk to races they have deemed "fleeting". They will barely tolerate races that share a similar, but still shorter, longevity, such as Dwarves and Gnomes. Races whose lifespans never reach three digits are completely disregarded. A few settlements, especially those closer to the border and thus mingling with a greater variety of folks, have tried to change this. Unfortunately, with creatures whose lifespans can near a century, it is hard to charge anything in a quick amount of time, at least to those with shorter lifespans.
Another horrid thing, that is slowly being rectified, is the slave trade within the settlements. With the argument that it is no different than humans using horse or oven, these elves have enslaved the races they believe are insignificant, especially humans and orcs. Through years of breeding and magical manipulation, these people have been created into creatures that are more akin to livestock than sentient beings, focusing purely on physical attributes while their mind is turned to mush. Even their tongues are cut out at birth and punishments are severe and bloody for even the most minor infractions. It is horrifying to travelers to see people like this, and due to this, many nations have sworn to never work with this nation as long as this slavery was commonplace. Many of the citizens were perfectly fine with this, believing other nations to be meddlesome at best and a threat to all elven kind at worse.
The Great Fire a hundred years ago changed that. No one is quite sure what started the inferno. Some say errant magic when a family grew too excited at the prospect of progeny, others claim that a mistaken kill of a fiery beast had caused it to explode and set the forest ablaze. A fair few of other nations believe it to be divine intervention to wipe out the horrors of the Fey Grove elves. No matter how it started, it quickly spread and within hours, nearly a third of the expansive forest was reduced to ash and the fire was growing rapidly. One elf, a young girl named Arelel Eldaren, sent out a powerful magic, and every bordering nations' citizen heard the desperate plea in their head. Most nations ignored this, but one decided to help. The kineticists were able to control the blaze and eventually extinguish it all together, saving more than half the forest and her inhabitants.
With this, thoughts on other races began to change. How can they look down on a race who singlehandedly sacred them from extinction? Arelel came forward, leading The Rising Light a group of individuals who call for the end of their barbaric practices, pleading for a strict ban on slavery, arguing that even beings as ancient as theirs must learn to adapt. Rigid oaks are snapped with great pressure, while flexible willows survive the storms. Their inability to adapt will only march them to extinction. Her viewpoint gained ground, especially in those who lost their homes and families in the blaze. Suddenly, the populace was split. Officially, Arelel was voted in as ruler, known to her country as The Dawn Queen. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees, and the old ruler, Egaron Birlond, has retreated into the forest along with a few who believe this is persecution against their kind. Arelel has tried to keep the peace and avoid civil war but her country grows more divided as modern ideals clash with ancient traditions.
