Najani

Description

A nation very few have actually visited but almost all have heard of, though whether all the whispers and rumors that fly around are actually true is a different story. What is known is this is a relatively new nation carved out in the Scorching Borderlands, only existing for the last three hundred years or so. Founded by a tribe of snakelike-humanoids fleeing from alleged persecution in Torpa, they started as refugees in Treland. When the tribe leader, Anen Phanes, came to the Trelandian Mage Council to request their own bit of land to claim as their own, the mages scoffed at them. Anen persisted, stating his people have money to pay for whatever Treland can give. Finally, thinking it a good way to make money on worthless land and getting rid of these refugees, Treland sold a six-thousand square mile piece of land in the desert for a price that should have made anyone pause, but the Najani happily paid and left.

Many in the council laughed as they watched the refugees leave, congratulating themselves on selling a barren piece of land for a small fortune. Plus, as a few pointed out, they would probably either die to the elements or to the beasts that wander within the desert and even if they could find one of the rare oases that speckled the desert, none would ever be large enough to sustain the thousands of refugees. They delightfully realized they could reclaim the land in ten years time with no loss.

Unknown to them, the Najani people had a secret. When fleeing from Torpa, they were able to smuggle a small stone out. Insignificant looking to the casual observer, but within it, was a potent and powerful magic. As they reached their new land, they began their search. Finally, they found one of the rare oasis, and they placed the stone at the bottom of the pool of water. Almost instantaneously, the magic surged through the land, morphing it into a paradise for their people. This became the capital and only city in Najani, expanding over the years as population grew but still centered around that original oasis.

The Najani flourished and made a name for themselves on the world stage very early within their nation's formation. Acting as hired mercenaries and with their unique venoms and poisons to sell to whomever had the most coin, their nation's wealth bloomed. This was also aided by bottling and selling the oasis' water, now enriched with the stone's magic. It acted as a natural healing potion with the ability to neutralize poisons and minor diseases. When the Kisz Empire was being ravaged by Whispering Fever, the Emperor begged Najani to help. The Najani are nothing if not business people and nearly a decade later, Kisz is still paying installments for the thousands of doses they bought.

Though Najani has an active presence in the world, they are still a very secretive people and very few have traveled to the nation, due to both its secluded location surrounded by miles of barren desert filled with monstrous beasts and to the Najani people being very unwelcoming to most races, especially other feral humanoids. Still, it is not unheard of to see Najani people traveling outside their desert nation, especially when hired as a mercenary or blade for hire, though most people may not even realize that they are Najani without a close look.

This stems from Najani's obsession with appearances, perhaps from the racism they experienced in both their original homeland and in the countries they sought refuge. Nowadays, those who appear most closely to human while still maintaining a "pure" Najani bloodline are held in the highest regards and hold the highest ranks in government and society. Unfortunately, those born with more snake-like appearances, especially in the face, are seen as less than and usually hold the most menial jobs. Still, even those that at a glance look human still show their Najani bloodline. All Najani have snake-like eyes, usually in ambers and golds, though other colors are also possible. Scales are also a common occurrence, though higher ranking tend to only have a few patches here and there, like jewels imbedded into their skin. Speaking to a Najani is also an easy way to figure out their origin, as their forked tongue can make it difficult to pronounce some words in common without an accent or lisp. Finally, the most important distinction is their natural venom that courses through their veins. Using their blood, they are able to envenom weapons with ease.

They are a nation both entwined and disconnected from the rest of the world, and most do live and die within the oasis, never leaving their lands. Najani as a nation has stated that they will remain neutral in any world conflicts, though they are happy to sell their poisons and water to the highest bidders, even sometimes supplying both sides. There have been rumors that during times of war, they have also sold their services as mercenaries and are responsible for several high target assassinations during wars. Najani will happily state that there is no evidence of this and they are simply a small nation trying to get by when larger ones start attacking each other.
