Culture

Language

The main language spoken in the outer towns is a heavily slangified version of several languages due to the diverse backgrounds of the survivors. Its not uncommon to hear the inhabitants switching off their translator to cuss in their own language.

Population

There are few people who actually live in the outer tunnels besides the people who run the stores. For the most part the main bulk of its population is vagrants hiding from the law, swielders heading out for an adventure, or military scrapsmiths and C.A.T engineers who work on shoring up the tunnels entrances defenses against the mutants in the outside world.

Currency

The currency here is potatoes, beer, any materials goods. Due to the difficulties in extracting natural metals from the soil with current tools, the towns, especially on the outskirts, are especially partial to bartering in any scrap or rare metals.

Motto

While each station may have their own motto, a common motto for the people in the outskirts could be "survival first, consequences second"

Laws

One basic federal law that is still honored in the outskirt stations include the law that any starving person entering a shop has the right to a loaf of bread given for free by the shop owner. Most other laws are considered guidelines, especially in regards to the health and safety of restaurants.

Sports

A common sport played by the inhabitants of these stations include a smith off. The two participants each have their own tools and furnace ready. Each are given a random assortment of scrap to turn into a tool, weapon, or decoration. At the end of a randomly selected time limit (1-3 hours), the two participants present their makes and are judged by the other smiths in the station. It is commonly used to settle disputes or rivalry's and is usually accompanied by a festival or celebration fo some kind.

Geography

Area

The outer stations often have their walls in disrepair due to the outside elements cracking or invading the stations. It is not uncommon for monsters to cause serious damage to the stability of the stations. As a result it can be seen that in these stations haphazard support beams are common place.

Crops

The majority of the crops produced by the outer stations are directly given back to the swielders, C.A.T engineers, and scrapsmiths defending the wall as military provisions. The outer stations only get semi regular supplies from the capital, the crops there are supposed to make up for that difference.

Located at

The outer stations are majorly located in the outer belt of the subway. The exceptions are stations 1-3 as they are back emergency exits to the sea in case the main city is overrun.

Climate

The Climate in the outer fringes is mostly grey, frigid, and cold. It is miserable working their as the geothermal heat is ripped away by the chilling winds of the outer wilds. It snows ash regularly, in addition medical conditions involving lungs are very common in this area. These high winds and ash are the result of the explosion that leveled the buildings in the area 500 years ago. It is likely that the sky will remain clogged for another 500 more. This means that there is also a serious deficiency of vitamin D in those at the wall due to the severe lack of sunlight. This is mainly solved through the regular use of UV lamps at meals. The climate here is also very poor for crops, and special equipment has to be built to maintain the temperature for appropriate growing conditions.

History

Founding Story

These outer stations were some of the first to be established after the explosion. Of course back then they were mainly defended with sharp sticks and logs. Due to the nature of their position the outer stations were unaware of the main city (station 0) until they came knocking on on their doors with agricultural innovations in A.E. 25. Stations 1-3 were primarily incorporated without resistance as the growth of food would complement their now fisherman lifestyle. Since the subway was now disconnected from other continents, part of it had flooded allowing for mass fishing. That would continue even when joined with station 0. However stations 4-11 had a much different reaction. These stations were founded on the blood, sweat, and tears of the brave souls who had defended themselves from the wildlife and marauders despite the odds. As a result by 20 A.E. they had a strong sense of independence, with each having their own form of government. However that would change in 30 A.E. when the suspension of aid from the main city due to their bid for official independence was put forth.

Established Year

The outer stations were established:
St1: established 10 A.E. incorporated 20 A.E.
St 2: established 8 A.E. incorporated 17 A.E.
St 3: established 11 A.E. incorporated 18 A.E.
St 4-6: established 5 A.E. incorporated 45 A.E.
St 7-9: established 6 A.E. incorporated 55 A.E.
st. 10-11: established 4 A.E. incorporated 60 A.E.

Notable Wars

There are two notable wars that the outer stations had to face. They include one in the early days of the stations, and one in the later days before they were incorporated. The one when the station was in its early days in 4 A.E. was an attack by the local wildlife. One of the younger survivors on a scavenging mission took a baby bear home as a pet. Days later not only did the momma bear come by ( a massive creature with impenetrable hide, extreme strength, and jet black fur), but a pack of laves (wolfs with laser claws), a couple of cogs, and a Rock (a giant bird from old seaman tales). While this was only one account from station 11, there were similar reports of mistakenly angering the wildlife in other outskirt stations as well. Historians later would call this the massacre war. It wasn't so much a war as a period of time where the outskirt stations had to figure out how to survive. Over 600 people died in that war. Later, inform 45-60 A.E. the war between the main city and the outskirts occured. The outskirts communicated with runners who ran through the wilderness to the other stations. However, due to their separated nature they could not repel the main city forever. in 60 A.E. the final station, station 11 fell and the kings domain expanded over the entire subway.

Notes

Notes

These stations often are romanticized by those in the main city as a place where someone can make their way on their wit, work, and wonder alone.
