Overview
The Grey Barrens
Field
A desolate plain of dusty, dark grey, material. No plants in sight and the ground is dappled in odd, circular rings in the dust. Outcroppings of stone jut out of the ground in irregular patches. Bubbles of methane and other related gasses rise from the ground, bringing up trails of dust with them. They rise until they dissipate or the bubble pops, giving off a small shower of dust. The area smells of decay and rotten eggs.
Culture
The plants do not speak because they are dead. The animals do not speak because they can not. The people do not speak because they have abandoned this land. The earth. The earth speaks in screams.
Only the most desperate of people come to live in the barrens, and even then not for long. Its a harsh environment to live in and extremely unsafe for long periods of time. It has mostly outlaws or people tough enough to survive in an area that wants to do its best to kill everyone in it.
"Watch the Ground"
This land is claimed by no country, and is considered a godless zone. Those who can live here are often outlaws or marauding bands.
Geography
It is bordered on the left and right by two nations run by fairly friendly gods, to the north is slowly runs out and morphs into grassland that goes until the sea.
No vegetation can grow here except for only the hardiest of plants. Maybe the odd scraggly bush or dying plant, but vegetation truly struggles.
The climate is hot and overbearing. While the sun is not the reason for the desolation, it does help keep it the way it is.
History
The land is considered cursed by those who live near it. A great battle was said to have occurred there, with the casualties in uncountable numbers. The bodies were abandoned and left to rot, slowly being covered over whole by the earth. The gods abandoned the land and it is said as the bodies decay and the gasses burst from the earth, it is their angry spirits desperately trying to escape and return to the land. It is notable that the bodies of this war should have long since decayed and should not explain the high amounts of gas in the area.
Unknown. Early civilization.
Just the war that founded it. A war of desolation.
Notes
- Many odd and adapted creatures have made this land their home.
-Heavily inspired by the ocean, where decaying creatures gives a similar effect underwater.
-The gas is highly flammable, making it extremely unsafe to hold camp with a fire here.
-The gas is also unsafe to breath, similar to carbon dioxide poisoning.
