Jobs

Researching

Researchers use the information gathered by the Chasers to develop weapons suited to fight the dragons. They also invent different, necessary things, like UV lamps, forms of power, water filtration systems, etc. They spend most of their time in labs, studying and inventing. This is the highest "paying" job.

Healers

Not to be confused with just doctors, healers use nanotechnology and biotechnology to heal and repair injuries within hours or days, depending on the severity.

Chasing

Chasers is the most dangerous of the jobs specific to the Lower World. Chasers journey above ground to extract practical data from the upper world, sometimes even fighting dragons or journeying further than anyone else would dare. They use weapons to fight, but they also employ Chasing, a technique that they refer to as "magic".

Scavenging

Scavengers journey above ground to plant, harvest, and gather. Mostly, older adults who haven't gained an education, or younger kids who want to earn more rations, take this job. It's risky, but not horribly so. Sometimes researchers tag along to learn ways to maximize productivity. They mostly grow simple, easy to grow vegetables, and sometimes they hunt if there are any animals about.

Magic

Lau's Floating Knives

Lau uses knives that seem to follow her every command. She uses her mind, like telekinesis, to move them around. However it is not magic, but technology. Since Lau was raised very wealthy and well off, when her parents heard her dreams of being a Chaser, they employed researchers to design a weapon for her. They invented the telekinetic knives she uses today. A chip is implanted into the primary motor cortex and into the hilts of her knives. Since it is implanted in the part of the brain that controls motion, the knives can be used like one uses a limb. This tech was highly expensive and cannot be replicated more than a few times until the tech required to build it runs out.

Chasing

Chasing is often considered magic by those who don't understand it. In actuality, it was developed as a genetically engineered weapon that could be used to infiltrate enemy bases. The gene, however, can be passed along to offspring, and most often is passed along. It is more common in female offspring, and more powerful in offspring with something "different" about their brains. (i.e. a kid with autism is better at it, or a kid who develops anxiety might get better at it).

Chasing is a teleportation ability. The limitations for most people are that you can only chase a small distance of about 20-30 feet, and it doesn't alter your speed. If, say, you're falling from a high distance, Chasing onto the branch of a tree to stop your fall would be a better idea than Chasing to the ground and breaking your legs. You can't Chase if someone is holding onto you or if you're otherwise detained. The parts of you touching whatever is holding you will be left behind. You can Chase through objects, but if you do, you have to do it carefully. Accidentally Chasing into the object would slice you in half.

People with "different" brains often surpass these limitations. For example, Mitsig, who has autism, can Chase while holding on to someone else, and can Chase up to 50 feet away. The majority of the people cast aside in the Northern Tunnels can do this.
