Overview
Feidhlyn
A species of deerlike humanoids who dwell within forests and concern themselves more with meditation and building skill than the afairs of the larger world.
Deerfolk
Looks
Mostly humanoid. The Feidhlyn are typically tall and spindly. Their legs end in hooves instead of feet and their heads are crowned with deerlike horns.
Their fur generally ranges from white through shades of brown and, rarely, ginger.
Most individuals tend to be between 7 and 8 feet tall.
245lb is the median weight for an adult Feidhlyn.
It's difficult to tell a male Feidhlyn from a female one. The only dimorphism is in the size of their horns, with males oft having larger, more intricate ones.
Their faces tend to be blessed with high cheekbones and almond-shaped eyes, but a flat nose the color of which is oft darker than the rest of their fur. Likewise, Feidhlyn can be distinguished from one another by the patterns of their fur.
Beneath the fur their skin is a mixture of pink and black, though the fur generally hides this fact.
Their ears are sharp and flare out somewhat.
The Feidhlyn favor loose robes and dresses, but more often than not it depends on their social status. Workers can oft be seen in little more than a loincloth or a sash whereas the druids and elders might wear ornate robes and togas.
Culture
A Feidhlyn's coming of age tradition involves meditating for two days and two nights in isolation two weeks before their birthday. During these two days, the Feidhlyn should have a vision, or otherwise be struck with inspiration for what to create. They will spend the rest of their time, again in solitude, working on an item that they will offer up at the eve of their birth. This would often be a statuette, a painting, a weapon or a piece of embroidery, but some Feidhlyn choose to hunt a great beast instead. Those that cannot come up with an offering, however, are often deeply dishonored. Though they would be given a chance to try again five years after the fact, the disgraced Feidhlyn is very likely to flee their village due to bullying and shame. These Feidhlyn are most often the ones to take up arms as adventurers and mercenaries, trying to make up for their failings in less traditional ways, whilst fleeing their home all the same.
The Feidhlyn worship three deities. Taerche of the Earth, who's gender is never specified and who watches over children, forests, its inhabitants and artists. Airhan of the Sun, who is male and who watches over workers, metes out justice and leads the dead to the eternal plains with his purifying fire. Finally, there is Eirûn of the Moon, who is female and who gives the seers their visions, watches over warriors and brings wisdom to the tribes.
The Feidhlyn are loosely governed by sages. An average village would have one sage and a few apprentices, but larger settlements may require a larger number of sages. These leaders convene at each solstice and are given equal voice, no matter how small their holding.
The Feidhlyn are technophobes. Anything not of the forest is foreign to them - though they tolerate metals, which are nevertheless of the earth, they prefer to build most of their weapons, armor and items of worth from enchanted wood and herb.
Craftsmen, artists and seers are the three main pillars of Feidhlyn society. Though a seer is more important than an artist and an artist is more important than a craftsman, even the lowest of all workers are deserving of respect.
