these humanoid creatures are the result of an abundance of radiation on an alternate earth, three suns orbit the planet and thus the skin of the Leathrin is pitch black and their eyes are exceptionally large, containing the appropriate apparatus to see more into the infrared spectrum, as well as the ultraviolet. The Leathrin do not have much strength, but the twisted gravitational fields forced their brains to develop in such a way that they are incredibly dangerous thanks to the natural magic capabilities of their species.

In the variation of the earth that the Leathrin live in, Jupiter shared its planetary orbit with another gas giant of equal size, roughly at the dawning of the bronze age, Jupiter and this other gas giant ignited, resulting in a trinary star system with the earth in its wake. Humans, as they were, did their best to survive, but the incessant bombardment of radiation, and the sudden lack of day and night cycle, forced an evolutionary response in a group of primates, resulting in exponential brain development, and growth. Those primates are now the sole sentient beings on the planet, as they hunted humans to extinction. They are now a space-faring race that trades their magical abilities in exchange for goods and services.
