modern day earth, where seemingly random people begin developing new physical and magical traits. during the mass hysteria of people sprouting wings, scales, and mermaid tails, fully formed 'angels', lizard people, and other 'fairy tale creatures' emerge from formerly undiscovered or unexplored sections of the earth, whether that be from underground or from the 95% of the unexplored ocean, and the people of earth must now come to terms with the new normal of getting into the starbucks line behind an orc and being unable to read the menu over his horns.
later it's found that the chemical changes found in approx. 2/3s of the earth's population come from particles that have been on earth for hundreds of years, dormant until now. the origin of these particles is unknown, but presumed to be from another planet. with the existence of orcs, mermaids, and lizard people now a reality, life existing on another planet is no longer as strange or far fetched as previously thought. it is thought that life has existed on other planets for about the same time as it has existed on earth, so obviously these planets would not have interstellar communication or transport as sci-fi would have you believe.
