the world of grace was once a big collective ruled under one government by a woman called phoenicia, until phoenicia one night grew wings and attempted to fly all the way up to the Northern Star, where humanity believed heaven was located; however, Phoenicia's body burned up and fell from the sky, destroying her physical form; only her soul remained, surviving on the Hope and love of humanity

after her death, her descendants took over, and over the course of hundreds of years the world slowly divided into multiple other countries, the strongest of which is esperanza, a country that wishes to bring back the old days where the world was ruled under one government, one flag; they seemingly attempt to accomplish this by annexing other countries, or by taking under countries under their heel

there are a handful of factions that oppose the esperanzan military-nobility, specifically a group of revolutionaries led by viola steele; over the course of the war between the revolution and the empire, a whole lot of shit (personal, political, and supernatural) happens

only individuals that are either immortal (due to magic going out of practice a long time ago), incredibly studious, or supernatural beings can utilize magic, and even then the level of competency varies from individual to individual

magic can only either heal or destroy, there are no-inbetweens; for example, magic cannot be used to affect the weather, or create items out of nowhere

like earth, with some caveats; magic exists, although it's incredibly rare by the time the story begins due to it being out of practice post-phoenicia - it's largely considered an archaic practice

in addition, angels exist, although they have also not been seen on earth for a very long time

very high during the present; skyscrapers, state-of-the-art computers, trains, planes, ships, submarines, cellphones; very technogaianistic

technology has been seamlessly infused with the victorian/spanish-esque royalty, making it kind of steampunk in a subtle fashion
