Overview
remake:Genesis
All of creation was once held within the boundless paradise of the world tree, Mordrasil--until Ghidon, an amalgamation of death and pure hatred, destroyed everything. In order to stop him, the divines sealed him away into the world tree, causing it to collapse on itself in the process. Now, several millennia later, after mortals have settled into the globe, the world faces peril once more. The prison holding Ghidon is coming undone, and his minions of darkness have begun terrorizing the weak and helpless. Will a hero rise to stop the world from being completely annihilated by a second apocalypse?
Fantasy, Post-apocalyptic
History
When the universe was born, there existed the world tree, Mordrasil; a small yet expansive paradise of peace among the chaotic and turbulent nature of the young universe. This tree was tended to and protected by the primordial deity Agia, who would later come to be revered as the high goddess and mother of all life and nature by Her subjects. Mordrasil was an endless fount of life and magic, and through Agia was it channelled to help maintain the sanctity of Her realm; thanks to Her, all creatures who dwelt within the realm flourished and knew nothing of conflict. Those who would dare defy or desecrate that sanctity would be cast into the Underbough, never to see the warmth of paradise again.
The first remnants of hatred and wrath of those cast down by Agia festered and manifested into a terrible and evil creature. This creature would go on to have many names such as the World-Eater, the Reckoner, the Primordial Deity of Death; yet there would be one name that every living being would recognize and come to fear--Ghidon. Though He was a creature of death, He was still comprised of beings borne of life. His new form was wretched and brittle; a husk that hungered endlessly for life's sustenance. The Underbough was devoid of life of any kind and shrouded in shadow; the light of paradise would never reach its depths. Ghidon attempted to climb the roots of Mordrasil but His body was far too weak--His hunger gnawed at Him so. Beneath his claws however, He felt the thrumming of life flowing through the world tree's roots, and decided to take on a different approach. He sunk his teeth into the bark of the roots, leeching power from the tree like a parasite. Slowly but surely His body grew stronger and fuller as he suckled the life magics from the tree. As time would go by, He would continue to draw his power from the Mordrasil and prey on the beings cast down from Agia's realm. From the depths of the Underbough, Ghidon would lie in wait for the day His strength grew enough for Him to return to paradise and exact his vengeance upon Agia, but that day would not come for many ages.
Meanwhile, Agia continued to safeguard the Mordrasil. Her children--Her subjects--followed Her wherever She went and loved Her as She loved them. From Her four legs She had birthed four sons; each one grew into a mighty and graceful stag that kept watch over the different parts of the world tree. The eldest son, Idain, oversaw the lush forests, jungles, and plains. The second son, Vidal, was the groundskeeper for the mountains and snowy tundras. Neyr, the third son, saw to the deserts and volcanic regions. Finally there was Rathor, the youngest son, who managed the oceans and the islands littering them.
From Agia's two arms She bore two daughters--Fyra and Demetra. Fyra took to the skies as a glorious phoenix and became the caretaker of the world tree's fauna, while Demetra rooted herself to the earth and took on the form of a mighty ent--becoming the caretaker for the flora. Life further bloomed and evolved with their conception, making for fuller and more bountiful crops, stronger and healthier animals, and even paving the way for sentient beings to exist and develop.
A small group of avian creatures became the world's first race of intelligent beings. They watched Agia and Her kin with awe and in their attempt to communicate their excellency, developed the first mortal language. Over the course of many millennia, numerous tablets were inscribed with tales of the endeavours of the high goddess and Her subjects, and temples were erected as places of worship for them. The became known as the avarians.
One day, as Agia wandered the wilds of Her world, She noticed something amiss as She crossed the snowy beds of the tundra. The land was locked in what felt like a ceaseless, violent blizzard--making the living conditions of the mountain and tundra-dwelling creatures much harsher than necessary. She attempted to commune with Vidal, whom was left with these lands as his charge, only to receive no response. For the first time, Agia felt fear stir in Her heart. She searched high and low, braving the turbulent conditions in search for Her son, and enlisted the aid of the rest of Her children in finding their missing brother. The search went on for days to no avail, until from the skies Fyra spotted a cave that seemed to be unnaturally shrouded in shadow. As she approached it, she felt a chill down her spine that she had never experienced before--it made her uneasy. Venturing further in, she found Vidal--but he had been killed.
Fyra let out an ear-piercing scream that shook the lands to its core. Agia quickly rushed to Fyra's aid and gazed in horror at Her son's mutilated form. Sorrow quickly took over as She held Vidal's body, followed by anger and confusion as to who or what could've killed him. Then She had a resolution:
She was going to bring Vidal back to life.
This was something normally done by the high goddess, as She felt it would interfere with the natural process of living things. Agia didn't care though--She was his mother, and She was willing to do the unthinkable just to have Her son back. For four days and four nights, She chanted a spell that would bring Vidal back from the dead and repair his body. During this time, She would not move for anything; She was so unresponsive that it almost seemed as though She was dead as well--but She persisted. After what felt like an eternity, Vidal opened his eyes to find his mother gazing down at him in joy. His scarred body rose up and bowed graciously to his mother.
What Agia was not aware of was that Vidal's death only served as a test--a test of Her true morals. [see Vidal's history]
Ghidon was not as happy, however. Now taking on the role as the curator of death, a gamut of emotions boiled within His being, making his body bubble and fester. Rage, that Agia only ever brought Vidal back to life. Betrayal, that She went against her vows that she loved all of her creations. Indignation, that the many lives that He had been before were not worthy of being brought back from the dead. Disbelief, that She would defy the natural order of living things for Her own selfish reasons. And resolve, that He would one day be the one to destroy Agia and everything She held dear--for if He was not deserving of life, then neither was She.
Notes
Note for contributors (4/28/18):
My current priorities are just general world-building and mythos at this point in time. As a rule of thumb, I try to keep my lore sort of parallel to Nordic and Greek mythology when it comes to deities and certain plot elements (with creative liberties, of course), but if you have ideas for other kinds of mythology you are welcome to share them or jot them on any relevant pages.
My best suggestion for trying to create new content is to make sure you're staying up to date with what I've written already, and if you need to consult me, then do that.
At this point in time, I would prefer ideas or expansion of ideas for the following:
- Locations
- Landmarks
- Races
- Towns(?)
- Creatures
- Floras
Please keep all written ideas in a consistent format; emphasis on consistent.
I will worry mostly on deities and the universe's history. Once we have more fleshed out landscape and peoples I'll be able to assign them to countries or kingdoms.
