But what do you have to say against the point Jyn made? Which I would point out, does not fit your dichotomy.

Jyn has actually contradicted herself here… a couple of months ago when we chatted she made a few different points against this… We mostly spoke of how Solangelo could use a lot more work then it had, OBVIOUSLY, but that we could see the benefits of it. I'm surprised she'd say what she did because I wouldn't believe it to be true personally… In any case, as the newer books come out the ship will progress further no doubt. Thoughts?

The thing I have the most problem with is Riordan screaming diVeRSItY out of the pages of the book. I have nothing against true diversity. What I have a loathing for is the Token _____ Character. And that’s what this was. And it wasn’t even done well!
That is what pisses me off. Not diversity. But using gay/black/Muslim/etc. people as a device to make money off of. Plus the terrible quality of the story, especially because it pushes ideals so over the top it blocks the story. I feel he wants diverse characters that is great. He’s probably only caving to social pressures at the moment. But if he truly wanted them without the movements supporting him I would be much happier about it. Look at Spiderverse. There was some well-done diversity. And one of the reasons it was so good was that they didn’t make a big deal out of it. Spider-Man is now black. Nobody questioned it. He speaks Spanish because of his mother. No comment. And that’s what makes it so good. That is the real diversity we want. No shoving it in our faces but making a narrative where your diversity doesn’t matter because it is completely unquestioned and not an issue. And Riordan failed that. Hard.

The points you make are valid concerning diversity and the way spider-verse handled it. However, for someone to completely dismiss the ideal and ability to write RR holds is totally uncalled for and offensive. He does seem to push the ideas of diversity incredibly (if not too far), but the whole point is that mythology is diverse. His books are diverse and therefore so are his characters. Wrong or right this was his aim and in no hate did he do this, his aim was never to offend people but empower YOUNG people. His writing is no Shakespeare nor the plot of Steven King but he had a purpose and he fulfilled it. Nico di Angelo was powerful. That is absolute. Alex in Magnus Chase was a strong character and not a representation of Gender-Fluid today but a relation of the original HISTORICAL facts from Scandinavia.

This is all completely beside the point. To call any writing without purpose and "of terrible quality" is simply incorrect. The point is, different writers, aim for different readers, it seems that you were not for him.

I do justify any of his shitty writings but I do not stand for such a shitty close-minded opinion either.

Is it really offensive though?? Just because you think it is doesn’t mean it inherently is.
I am not holding his ability in contempt to any standard but his original work. The original series was better written by far (especially in book three on).
Honestly it doesn’t matter his intention. I judge based on the end quality. I appreciate good art, especially in the writing world. His original stuff was good. Not Good. But good. I couldn’t read Apollo 1 it was so bad. And I still read Sea of Monsters and Lightning Thief. And I have outgrown them some. But I get a great deal of enjoyment nonetheless. The new stuff doesn’t Spark Joy if you get what I mean. And it’s because of the quality.
Maybe his writing does empower the youth. Good for him. But that doesn’t mean it’s good. Was it really powerful? ‘Cause I didn’t feel it. And I got rather emotional over the Breakup episodes of Sanders Sides. I haven’t read the new stuff so… Idk. But personally I think the thought of the character of Alex was great.

Close minded? Try critical. I call it as I see it. If it sucks I’m not saying otherwise. He aimed for a purpose and part of it was the popularity game and not good writing.

I suppose its the eye of the beholder, I loooooooooooved his original books, but this may have been more because of certain events in my life that made the book precious at the time. Percy has always been funny and the plot developed really well. I liked the second series well-enough, even though it did seem to drag on, I loved the new characters and the depth of Percabeth and the OG characters development. I agree that TOA has gone a bit far. Glad we can also agree on Alex, she/he/they/whatever are really cool.
Again, eye of the beholder, and personal experiences. I think that whatever Rick did we wouldn't have loved it anywhere near as much and introducing a new main character (apollo) put off so many fans man.

Honestly lets go about Nico. In my childhood (and in many many others I've spoken to) he changed the way I see myself and how I handle things related to him. Not only that, he is arguably the most in-depth (emotionally) character we've received from this universe. His story gradually built, his layers of emotion, the message he portrayed, everything he went through. It gave a brilliant side-story.

But by all means, debate it with me, you know I love it

book

Brilliant. Go ahead and give the reasons you think Nico is so deep. In fact, talk about all you love of Nico. I’ll comment on what I see. Also I love him the most in Titans Curse. He was so cute!

Can we at least agree that there should be a Riordanverse animated show? There's too much content to make into live-action movies (especially with child actors) but it'd work really well as an animated show. Especially with the Mist, and the monsters, and small things like Alex's wardrobe.

No need to be Lol! I was just joking around because I love doing that.

@LaniGirl

Ok catch me writing an essay, not that I haven't done that before…

So, primarily I love Nico for his growth, his well-written (in my opinion) development, his style, and his downright sarcastic personality.

When we first meet Nico, (as you said) he is super cute, he's happy and energetic and the opposite of what we have now. He is so ignorant to himself and the world he is about to endure, Nico displays separation anxiety from his sister which already hints at was is to come. Makes me sad. It also gives a nice hint at what could have caused this (his past, losing his mother and memories AND his entire time period).
As the book series progresses, (titans curse, Bianca's death, the basics) he becomes even more guarded and dangerous. He is completely alone, with nothing to remember of his past, except ya know, that delightful internalised homophobia (thanks Hitler). From happy to sad and angry, Nico goes on his own side journey while Percy sails his own (sails, get it? nvm, ill stop). He seems to accept defeat and not only forgives Percy but loses his anger almost completely, expending all physical and emotional energy for him. That's called Walking Depression another relatable thing Nico brings to the table.

Nico's crush is also VERY realistic, as we find out later on, Nico aided Percy in attempt to show affection (Mrs. O'lEary, Bob, The Lethe, show traveling the statue, saving the original war and more) He has been clearly awkward and blushing around Percy from the start but we were made to mark this off as a crush on Annabeth which will become more powerful for certain readers later on.

Nico is super conflicted and complicated, he longs to belong but refuses to stay put, in a result of his past he doesn't lower his guard from fear of hurt that he ends up probably more hurt then, to begin with. His guard builds with every book, it's obvious of his self-hate and confusion. The poor kid needs a rest from war, death and even himself.

By the second series, he is unrecognisable. With feeble attempts, he tries to build back up (distancing himself, bringing back Hazel aka fake Bianca, disappearing from camp AGAIN). After the heart-wrenching outing scene with cupid, which was super uncomfortable but also powerful and confronting for both him and readers. Mainly for those readers who are too closted or have witnessed anything of mass trauma.

So after gaining Jason (rip) as an uneasy friend, their friendship builds as Jason demonstrates his trust and loyalty for the boy. Then he offers himself up (for Percy) to complete arguably the hardest quest yet, delivering the statue back to America with his powers, this almost destroys him again. So many close counters with death for Percy man. This whole book BOO is amazing for him, he opens up in his chapters, answers questions raised from the first series and we get to see the way he ticks. Plus that bonding with Reyna and Coach Hedge is so good for him ahhhh.

Then, of course, Will freaking Solace. The one and only.

Look, I get it, Will is a background character so we shouldn't be able to ship them so easily. Wrong. Or at least, not completely right. The whole journey of learning Neeks went through was his fear. Supposedly, he knew Will as kids when he first came to chb and he liked him well enough to remember him like three years later, he was then comfortable enough to admit feelings and even date Will Solace within a couple of months to a year. DEVELOPMENT!!!! ( say that word too much here lol). He has gone through enough to find Solace. (ok ill stop the puns now, seriously)

Bottom line, Nico is a sad emo boi who needs to be protected at all costs.

There are certainly more intelligent ways to encourage your opinion, I could find my old geeky reports, but I think I've touched the basics and at least vouched for his persuasion over at least one reader.

Personally, I may be biased as Nico helped me come to terms with my own stuff as a kid, but this was his purpose and its what he has done for others I've spoken too, in this sense, he was well-written. It is certainly clear that the fandom favours him. Rick seemed to take time on this character, it meant something to him too as he spoke about in interviews.

Like no hate bro, but I'm legally (exaggerating here) correct.

So here's what I would do:
Disney is launching Disney Plus or whatever. RR's books are Disney-Hyperion. They do a show, one season per series with however many episodes necessary (it could be like Steven Universe where there's a lot of episodes, but longer ones than SU's). It's animated, so you don't need to worry about child actors aging up too much between live-action movies (not really an issue with series 1, but it would be very obvious in HoO) or finding a ton of extras with blonde hair and grey eyes to be Athena's kids, for example. It's flashy, colorful, and has a fairly realistic yet not uncanny valley animation style. You don't need to deal with shoddy CGI monsters and effects, the cast has their iconic looks that might be hard to capture with or come off as tacky on real people (Hazel's cinnamon hair, Alex's heterochromia, Hearth's white hair, Percy's exact eye color, etc.).
Maybe even branch into Rick Riordan Presents eventually.
Idk just a though ig
