She sighed, frustrated. "I want know what Vanguard is. You say no. I offer deal, you say yes. I owe you answer in exchange."

She sighed, frustrated. "I want know what Vanguard is. You say no. I offer deal, you say yes. I owe you answer in exchange."
"Ohhhh, I see." He frowned, thinking hard. "'How do I stop those cards?"
group
She thought. Her Caretaker training hadn't really touched on the subject of the cards very much, only that they were easy access to Runes and magic for nonmagic users. "Runes are… difficult. Minds of their own. To use Runic, you must know Runic." She glanced sidelong at him, inhaling some more smoke. "Temple can teach some, if chosen. I can teach, too. If, chosen."
He shook his head. "I'm not looking to stay in one spot for too long. But thanks, anyways."
group
She brought the cigarette back to her lips but paused. "Neither do Caretakers. We jump all over place. Countries and worlds." She pinched her lips together. "We need more. Not enough numbers for work to do."
group
"I am human," Clove said.
He again shook his head. "Being attacked to magic like a Rune temple makes me traceable. And, to be frank, my past experience of large magic groups didn't go all that well."
group
Clove shrugged. "Caretakers hidden. Unknown. Protected by Runes. We not magic. Not normally." She sighed. "Can't believe I try to recruit demon. Suppose can't judge."
"I don't want to be called a fucking demon. I just wanna be Runner. When people find out, they don't look at me the same. Think I'm a freak." He shook his head. "I'm here to help Athena, and then be on my way."
group
Clove actually looked a little sorry. "Very well. Temple not far."
He turned to her, ticking the points off of his fingers. "The past 2 weeks, I've woken up in the middle of the ocean with no clue how I got there, had to fight a horde of fucking imps, had to fight my own father, find out I'm not myself, push a part of my out of me own mind, and escape 5 fucking gods that were breathing down my neck. So sorry if I've been short, but you don't have a clue. But you think you're so fucking smart that everything just bends to your will and everyone is gonna bend to your beck and call. Well, boo hoo, bitch, life doesn't work that way. I'm done. Tell your friends I said Hi. If you even find them." His fists clenched as he turned around and started following the path they had taken into the forest.
group
Clove grabbed the back of his shirt, stopping him. "Wait. You made promise. We promise to leave past alone. Just… Don't go."
It was the most sincere she had been towards him. Really, he had grown on her, and she didn't want to see him leave. Just like how Hero has left.
He turned around, nearly lashing out at her before, once again, his own voice came through his head. 'Calm the fuck down, you've been a dick and you know it.' He closed his eyes for a moment and sighed. "Alright, alright. Fine."
group
She offered a tiny rare smile. "Thank you."
"Only 'til her friends are found."
group
She nodded, then pushed passed heavy shrubbery off of the path. There was the Temple standing tall and proud. Its surface was smooth and unadorned to the naked eye, but as Clove breathed in her cigarette's smoke, Runes of all shapes and sizes were carved in it, glowing a dull blue. A man, perhaps in his early 20s, sat on the stairs again, messing with his double-sided battle ax, flicking it to fold it in half so it was only one-sided, then flicking it again to unfold it. He looked up at the emerging group, arctic blue eyes resting on Runner.
(Okay, side note: Hero doesn't know a lick of English, so everything he says is in Russian. Should I italicize so you remember?)
He smiled up at Clove. "These your new friends, Clover? An odd group." He looked back at Runner with a glint in his eye. "He's kinda cute. If you really squint."
(Yeah, that would probably help
He tilted his head. "What did he say?"
group
(It has just occurred to me that this is the first time they're hearing her name)
group
Clover just rolled her eyes. "Nothing important."
He shrugged, inspecting the runes carved into the stone with interest.
((Hey, he ain't that ugly
((And he's the dick
He was too busy studying the runes to really care, tilting his head every once and a while as he thought.
((By just….standing there?
