I love HoO even more than the first PJO series, started the Kane Chronicles—but couldn't finish them because I don't have them—and loved it as well, and then got the first ToA book. Read it. And never had the desire to get the others. Apollo's just not a good MC, and I didn't like Meg.

And then I heard a spoiler that I did no approve of, and that further solidified my refusal to read the rest of the books

Magnus Chase was great, so was the first TOA, but I never finished the second.
Also hot take: The Kane Chronicles were great, but they're overhyped among the people that know about them.

kane chronicles was the SHIT for mixed kid rep and had sadie kane, enough said there. i also liked the egyptian mythology a lot. i think if rick had written it a few years later though it could have been like, even more top tier

The writing was just not great. I've read The Red Pyramid several times fairly recently and it was just. Very forced. I enjoyed Sadie immensely, I would probably die for Carter and the cat goddess could kill me and I'd thank her aggressively. I thought the plot was a little strange and I knew nowhere near enough about Egyptian mythology to keep up the first time I read it. But sometimes I just sat back like "Rick? Is it really you writing this?"

yeah no you're right on every account there. that's why i didn't appreciate it as much when i first read it, 'cause the writing vibed wrong. the flow of pjo was gone, but the characters at least carried it so fucking well

also dom imma fight you on hp being better than pjo. pjo's worldbuilding was the best, jay kay arr didn't even account for race in her worldbuilding, basing her magic system entirely around white people

That's the opposite for me. I didn't really notice the writing when I first read it. It was before writing style was really on my radar

I mean, fair. But I put down the Apollo one.

….. fair
I just didnt like the premise of that one

It wasn't the premise that got me. The general quality felt subpar.

we been knew dumbledore was gay. jkr didn't have to go out there, say it, change it seventeen times, and then proceed to not mention it in a movie involving his backstory. also i do actually stan black hermione but i do Not okay jkr herself

I still don't think I've read Blood of Olympus and I'm not sure I finished Mark of Athena. But Jason Grace can suck my toes. I hate him. I also just didn't really like the Roman mythology

YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU

baby crocs was never aware of writing flow pickles. baby crocs just did't like books they didn't vibe with. my reading was a constant vibe check and if i didn't like something it was done for

Dude
Magnus Chase is awesome

I heard that the characters were too similar to PJO.

Bruh the "Rick Riordan: I need a character that's not like Percy. I know! This is Magnus and he hates blue" textpost or whatever it is, is not saying the characters are too similar. It's a joke. Ik you have trouble understanding them sometimes but come on

Nah. I got this from the reviews when it first came out.

… we'll agree to disagree about Jason who i declare betrothed to a brick
And, for me, I find all kinds of mythology fascinating, and it was actually HoO that introduced me to other mythologies other than Greek. and despite me having more than three Greek characters I differ more towards the Roman aspects

It wasn't as fun as Camp Half Blood and baby pickles felt let down by that. Plus I just knew less about it and was even more confused than when I read TKC

Aight. Valid to poke at JKR's worldbuilding. It sucked. Though not as badly as KotLC. But HP has a deep vibe that PJO or anything by uncle Rick will ever have. HP has depth. That's the reason it's so great. PJO is fun and I love it. But HP approaches (though it does not reach) being Good™ books. JKR's stuff has inlaid messages about love and friendship as well as beautiful setup and foreshadowing.

ungodly gush noises

call him OUT. grover and percy literally were the best fucking friends ever, percy developed a solid friendship with annabeth before ever dating her, percy had a whole sub-arc about learning to accept tyson as his half brother and everyone else did too, despite their literal past trauma involving nearly being killed by a cyclops

annabeth and thalia? sisters by choice. family at its strongest
