"For such a filthy place, there's less ash than I thought," Daso said, peering through the darkness and kneeling by a bench. He covered his hands in soot and stood back up. "Here you go, give me your face."

@gracehustle

Andrea carefully made her way next to him, making sure not to trip on the cannon ball, “How often do you think I’ll have to put this stuff on my face?”

@WriteOutofTime

He looked at her face for a moment before he began rubbing the ash gently onto her skin. "It's a shame you have to at all. Your skin is so nice." He fell silent for a moment. "Since pirates don't really bathe, it should stay on."

@gracehustle

Her cheeks flushed and she looked to the floor, her nose wrinkling at the second statement, “I’m not looking forward to bring dirty.”

@WriteOutofTime

"Neither am I," he admitted, lowering his hands. "I hate dirty things."

@gracehustle

“Well, if you hate dirty things, how does my face rank on your dislike to hate scale?” She asked jokingly, doing her best not to rub the soot off her face.

@WriteOutofTime

"No amount of soot could ever make you actually dirty," he laughed, poking her cheek. "Like I said, you're too pretty!"

@gracehustle

Again, her face flushed and she face scowled at him, “You’re gonna wipe the ash off my face.” She crouched down and swiped some spot onto her finger before standing up, poking him on the nose in return.

@WriteOutofTime

He laughed again. "Alright, sorry! Let's head back onto the main deck. I want to see the ocean."

@gracehustle

“Alright.” She straightened out her shirt and fixed the cap on her head. “Do I pass for a boy though?” She asked in the voice they had settled on for her.

@WriteOutofTime

He looked her over. The baggy clothes hid her frame, the hat hid her hair, and the soot hid the details of her face. He nodded, "I think so."

@gracehustle

Andrea gave him a small smile and nodded, “Then let’s go back up to the deck.” With that, she headed back towards the door, glancing at Daso and fixing her cap.

@WriteOutofTime

Daso followed behind her, squinting as they reamerged into the autumn sun. A smile crept along his face, first small, then growing more excited by the minute. "We're pirates," he said aloud, his eyes sparkling.

@gracehustle

She shielded her eyes as they came up but quickly dropped her hand, her smile growing at his excitement, “I suppose we are, at least for the moment.”

@WriteOutofTime

He ran to the side of the ship, leaning over the edge and gazing down at the deep blue abyss. "Come over here! It's incredible!"

@gracehustle

“The water?” She laughed lightly, sure to make sure she was using her boy voice as she made her way over to him and looked over the edge as well. The water was amazing, even though she had lived her whole life by the sea, this water was different.

@WriteOutofTime

"There's so much," he said, shielding his eyes to see further into the horizon. "I mean, I know it's the ocean, but it looks like it stretches out forever. It looks like freedom." He said the last sentence quietly, almost too quietly.

@gracehustle

She glanced over at him but didn’t ask any questions, smiling softly at him instead as she propped her elbows up on the edge and relaxed, “Where do you think we’re going?”

@WriteOutofTime

"Who cares?" he laughed, mimicking her pose and resting his chin against his hand. "I've never left the city before. It looks like we're heading east, but otherwise…no idea."

@gracehustle

“I’ve just read about places in a book,” She admitted, “I’ve never left the city either.” Andrea glanced at the rest of the ship for a moment before turning her attention back to the water and the seemingly endless horizon.

@WriteOutofTime

"I hope we go to a big city somewhere," he said, "or the mountains. Or anywhere, really. Where do you want to go?"

@gracehustle

A smile appeared on her face at the question and she answered quickly, “Somewhere exotic, with culture and languages I haven’t heard of.”

@WriteOutofTime

He nodded, agreeing, "That would be cool. I want to meet as many new people as possible."

@gracehustle

“As long as they’re friendly meeting new people isn’t bad,” She agreed, nodding and trying to imagine what they would see on their adventures on this ship.

@WriteOutofTime

Daso fell silent for a moment, before angling towards her. "So, what made you choose to follow a random stranger onto a pirate ship, anyway?"

@gracehustle

She glanced over at him, “Uh, it was scary dude, he was coming back up the docks and looked even madder than before. I didn’t want to get into trouble,” She admitted, rubbing the back of her neck.

@WriteOutofTime

"So it was spur of the moment," he said with a surprised laugh. "Do you think you'll ever go back?"

@gracehustle

“No, probably not.” She shook her head and shrugged, “My life wasn’t bad there or anything, I just want to see more of the world.”

@WriteOutofTime

"You won't miss anyone you left behind?" he asked, hoping he wasn't overstepping her boundaries.

@gracehustle

Thinking for a minute, she nodded, “I’ll miss a few people, but I’ll be alright. What about you? Why’d you let a stranger follow you onto a pirate ship?”
