The captain seemed none to pleased with the new information, though he kept his face neutral. After a moment he shook his head, obviously trying to figure out what to say as his fingers curled into light fists.
Andrea stayed silent, shaking barely as time went on and no one moved a muscle. This was either going to end badly or in the very least with someone getting hurt.
“A girl.” He captain muttered, turning to face Daso, “What do you have to say about this, boy?”
He for a fleeting second considered lying, but changed his mind quickly. "I knew all along, sir" he said, bowing his head humbly. "We meant you no disrespect."
“Meant me no disrespect,” The captain mimicked, facing both of them with a scowl, “Do you know how many superstitions have to do with women on board?” He spun on his heel and started pacing around in front of the two of them, pushing the first mate back a half step, “I should just kill you both.”
Daso flinched away from him. "We didn't, I mean it! Superstition is hardly a good reason to kill someone."
“Bring these two to my quarters.” The captain growled, his eyes narrowing as he looked between the two of them and the first mate, “So I can decide what to do with them without an audience.”
The first mate roughly grabbed the two by their shoulders, dragging them behind the captain with no gentleness. "I have a request, captain," he growled, his grip tightening. "That whatever you decide, I get a few punches in on this one." He pulled Daso's hair.
“You can use him as a persona punching bag if that’s what you want, just let me figure out what to do with them first.” He replied, marching into his cabin after dismissing the rest of the crew. The captain dismissed the first mate once he pushed the two of them into his cabin, motioning for them to stand and do nothing, “I don’t personally care for superstitions boy, but that still doesn’t mean I don’t have a reason to kill you. I could get killed or my crew could mutiny, which wouldn’t end immensely well for me especially.”
"Well, what do you want us to do about it?" Daso asked, still scowling at having his hair pulled. "Why not let them know who's boss?"
The captain rolled his eyes, “What would have bees helpful for this who situation is if that girl,” He glared at Andrea as he talked, “Hadn’t said anything about being a girl until we got to port. I should just kill both of you and save myself the trouble of dealing with this. Plus getting punched would hurt a lot less for you mate.”
“You promised you wouldn’t kill us,” Andrea squeaked, quickly looking to the floor once she said it, “And Daso did nothing wrong, if you were going to kill anyone it would just be me and not him.”
"No, actually, you'd have to kill me and let Andrea go," Daso said quickly, shrugging as though it were a fact. "I convinced her that her disguise would work, and I dragged her into this mess. If you're gonna kill, might as well be me."
“You didn’t drag me into this mess,” She protested, looking over at him, “I’m the idiot that blew my cover, and I’m the one that joined you on the docks anyway.”
The captain stayed quiet as they bickered, pacing around the cabin in front of them again. “Quiet! Both of you.” He stopped in front of them again when a plan came to mind, “How about we make a deal, since girl over there reminded me I can’t kill you.”
"Her name is Andrea, not girl," Daso corrected with a cheery grin. "Now that we're not about to be viciously murdered, what do you have in mind?"
“Well, I was thinking of something along the cheery let you go free kind of thing,” He said, sarcasm dripping from every syllable, “With free food and the chance to fly.” The captain looked around the cabin and made his way to his desk, leaning against it, “Since the first mate would love to use you, boy, as something to beat up, I’ll let him do that. Then, since the crew will mutiny if I don’t really teach you a lesson, I’ll have to think of something else as well. And then I’ll end off the show with tossing girl there in the brig and use you as just free labor until we reach the port.”
"The brig?" he said. "You can't toss her in the brig! That's even worse luck, didn't you know?"
The captain raised an eyebrow, clearly not believing him, “Oh? I didn’t know about that one, please, enlighten me.”
Andrea shifted from foot to foot as the captain talked, her eyes wide and flicking back and forth between Daso and the captain. At least she got to let her hair lay against her back again, even if it was the thing that gave away her identity.
"Well, if you have a woman on a ship, it's bad luck," he said slowly, "but if you mistreat a woman on a ship, well, the ocean has a hell of a temper and she's quite protective of females. Sirens, too. And ghosts."
“She wouldn’t be mistreated, just punished along with you and put in the brig while you work on the ship.” He shrugged, pushing himself away from his desk and walking around the cabin casually as he talked, “I’ll even make a deal with you, the better your work on the ship, the better she gets treated. Deal?”
Daso considered the offer for a long moment, before a slow smile began to spread on his face. He wasn't particularly skilled in much, but he was a people pleaser. This should work just fine. "You got a deal! Soon you'll be buying her silk sheets because I'm about to be the best damn slave you'll ever see."
The captain rolled his eyes, “We’ll see about that. Remember, you get to be used as a personal punching bag first and are going to be beaten up in some other way as well before I put you to work.” He made his way back to his desk before calling the first mate in, “Today is your lucky day, we have a deal with the boy, you get to beat him up, the girl goes in the brig and we can continue on our path without any more mess ups.”
Andrea looked over at Daso with wide eyes, wondering why he had so easily agreed. He could have denied knowing her and have gotten off without getting in trouble in the least, but now he was agreeing to work in exchange for her wellbeing as well as his own.
The first mate cracked his knuckles, grabbing Daso by the collar and lifting him to his toes. "Sounds perfect," he spat.
Daso managed one last smile as he was dragged away. "Don't worry, Andrea, our adventure has only just begun!"
“Now, what will we do with you until your friend out there is done being beat up and I can think of something to punish you two together.” The captain wandered around his cabin again, tapping his chin with a finger, “Maybe I can have you scrub the deck again, you’d get a front and center view of what’s happening.” He looked to her, almost like he was waiting for her suggestions of what to have her do.
She stayed silent, wondering if she could make a deal with the captain to somehow make Daso’s work on the ship easier. After a few long moments she nodded, “Ill scrub the deck, under one condition, more than half of the work he does while I’m in the brig helps him and not me.”
The captain shrugged, “Sure, now go clean.” He pointed out the door and she quickly exited the cabin to find a rag and some water, not looking to see if Daso was anywhere.
The first mate glared into Daso's face with a face contorted with hate. "Ya know what I dislike most about ya, lad?" he spat directly into Daso's face. "You're smug. You're a liar, but you think you're so much smarter and better than everyone." He threw him to the ground, calling out, "Gather 'round! I'm about to teach this stowaway a lesson in manners."
Daso tried to keep a brave face, for Andrea's sake as much as for the sake of his own dignity, but it was becoming increasingly difficult. He was used to beatings like these. He'd usually let his face go completely blank, but that wasn't enough for him. He forced a smirk. "I'd say pick on someone your own size, but that'd be hard for you. You're unusually rotund." He was cut off with a swift kick to his jaw, sending pain and dizziness through his skull. For a moment he struggled between consciousness and unconsciousness, but a rough slap from the man was enough to bring him back to his senses. He spat a mouthful of blood. "That's all?" he laughed.
Andrea located semi clean looking bucket with water in it and grabbed a rag, walking back out onto the deck and immediately getting to work. She could hear the first mate and Daso on the other side of the deck but she kept her eyes on the dirty boards, wincing every time she even thought she heard him get hit or hurt in any way. “My fault,” She whispered, scrubbing the boards quicker than she wanted to. More time scrubbing meant less time in the brig.
The first mate spotted Andrea from across the deck. Grabbing Daso by the hair, he dragged him closer to Andrea, so that the blood from his mouth dripped onto the boards of the deck. "Missed a spot," he laughed, slamming an elbow into Daso's ribcage.
She very visibly flinched when he got elbowed, wiping up the spot of blood before getting back to work on the boards. Looking towards Daso, she mouthed a small ‘I’m sorry’ and went back to scrubbing, knowing she was responsible for him getting beat up. If she hadn’t shown she was a girl none of this would’ve happened.
He tried to say that it wasn't her fault, but he was cut off as the first mate threw him back to the ground and kicked him in the chest one last time. Pain exloded in his ribcage and he knew he'd broken at least a few ribs. The first mate spat on him and stormed away, mumbling, "Clean yourself up and get to work."
