Rai had been searching around the store, picking up various food products that she had never seen before. Suddenly, a large muffledthud sounded from outside. She snapped her head up to see M laying on the ground, expressionless. Rai ran outside in a panic, only to watch him get up smoothly, as if he didn't just fall from the roof of a store. Did he just…? What?
"What the hell?" she exclaimed. Who the hell is this guy?

M yawned and pushed the people crowding around him away. “Yes, yes, I am quite alright.” He smirked slightly at Rai’s confused, panicked thoughts.
“Anyway, Rai, please bring over the evidence we found, if you would.” He looked over, meeting her gaze.

@icecubes

His calmness tells me this happens way too often. Why have I not heard of him? What an adventure this is. Rai blinked a few times trying to process before handing over the material to M. Everyone who had gathered around held confused faces. Rai waited for M to explain.

M took the cloth and studied it carefully. “Mmm… I know this cloth. Dirt at the end, the scruffiness… Mr. Frewyer come forward.”
M’s nervous intern scuffled forward, twirling his fingers together. “Y-yes, sir?”
“May I see your left pant leg?” His eyes were searching Frewyer’s carefully. The one a parent would give their child when they were trying to catch them in a lie; and succeeding in figuring it out.

@icecubes

Rai watched in amazement as M was able to know that much from such a small sample of clothing. Even which side of the pants too… How? Mr. Frewyer lifted his leg, and indeed, there was a hole identical in shape to the cloth. An intern, hiding in plain sight, huh?
"Did you kill this man, Mr. Frewyer?" Rai inquired, searching the intern's panicked eyes.

Frewyer set his leg down. His eyes had gone blank. He opened his mouth to speak, but once again, M rose a finger.
“I gave you a chance, Mr. Frewyer. But you had broken your promise to me. You lied. You did not give up your… my want for a better word… addiction. You lied to one of the most powerful people in this city. Therefore, without a doubt, you shall be executed.”
“You can’t do that!” The man suddenly burst out, stepping towards M.
M stuck out a hand. Frewyer recoiled.
“Precisely. Get out of my face.”

@icecubes

One of the most powerful people in this city, he said.
Rai furrowed her brow. There seemed to be more to this story than she had assumed before. Everybody was equally surprised as she, their faces full of shock as they watched Frewyer.
The girl turned to M. "Addiction?"

M stepped towards Frewyer and loomed over him like a statue. His eyes crackled with rage, but his voice was soft, perhaps a bit firm when he addressed Rai’s question.
“Addiction. This man… He is incredibly intelligent and is very good at masking his emotions. But I can see through that mask. I didn’t tell him this, nay. I gave him a chance!” He pressed meaning into ‘chance’ by seizing a thrown punch from his foe. He squeezed Frewyer’s fist in his wide hand. “Yet I was foolish to trust him.”

@icecubes

M reacted fast and with ease, but to be fair, Frewyer moved with emotion, not skill nor logic. It was a punch derived from anger. What did this Frewyer go through to become like this?
Rai curiously witnessed the strange scene between the detective and the criminal. "He's going to jail, right?" she asked, as she leaned on her heels.

M threw back Frewyer with a burst of energy that slammed a loud noise around the area and shook the ground. He threw his hands to his sides neatly like a drum major after a preformance and glared down at the criminal.
“Of course he is. But I will not rule out execution.”

@icecubes

The other police threw handcuffs onto Frewyer's wrist, tightly enough to leave marks upon his wrists. He got shoved into a car, and while it all happened he had been looking at M with an unreadable expression.
Rai inhaled deeply, having so many questions to ask of M, but unsure of which ones were appropriate to ask. Are you human? Why did you decide to be a detective? What other powers do you have? Are your powers natural or from an experiment, like me? She did not ask any of those.
"Are all your cases figured out this fast?"

M stared back, like a dangerous predator rearing up to strike. This man would be dead the moment M was able to stamp down on his execution ticket.
Are you human? This thought from Rai caught his attention. Though he was slightly dismayed when she didn’t ask it.
He turned to her, collecting his case and brushing dirt off of his jacket as the forces drove off.
“Sometimes. Sometimes it takes me five minutes. Others it takes me an hour.” He looked down at her thoughtfully. “Would you like to come back with me?”

@icecubes

As M packed up, Rai began to feel disappointed that her exciting adventure was ending. He answered her question, the one who didn't truly care to hear the answer to, but then he offered something else.
“Would you like to come back with me?”
Rai perked up, eyes sparkling with enthusiasm once again. I have time to ask him more questions, without an audience. What a chance! "Hell yeah!" She went to pick up her bike, walking it side by side with M.

M walked at a rather quick pace. He refluffed his hair and took off his jacket, swinging it over his shoulder. He usually enjoyed a loose office look. Not the uptight boss look. He led her to the private little building in which he worked in and told her to park her bike at a bike rack.

@icecubes

They walked in a comfortable silence. Finally, the two arrived at the place M worked at. Rai neatly placed her bike onto the rack, wrapping the lock around it. She took notice of her clothes. This is not suitable for such a formal workplace… Too late now.
She followed M in, the front desk nodding to him. Everything was decorated to a minimum, as most government facilities were. It occurred to Rai she had never experienced a crime related adventure.

M gave a slight nod back and scanned a card from his case, opening a set of doors. He pushed it open and held it for her, gesturing. Whenever she scooted in, they were introduced to a long hall ending in an elevator. The hall was shiny and a pristine white, sparkling. There hung paintings with soft-looking carpets laying on the ground. He led her over to one of the only office rooms on the floor and opened the doors with another swipe of the card. His room looked much more… personalistic. It was messy with wrappers of food littering around the trash can, as well as crumpled up balls of papers. Paintings of beautiful seashores and mountainous peaks as well as a couple cat paintings hung there too. The room was dressed in a fancy black carpet with a light gray rug. The walls were painted a deep gray color, and the windows were shut and shuttered.

@icecubes

Rai entered the dimly lit room, inspecting each decoration. She made a lap around the room. Looking at the detail within the paintings, reading any book title or paper that was set out on the desk. The strange life of a detective. These cats are rather adorable though.
Rai took a seat in a spare chair when she finished looking. "You've got quite the office, M. Speaking of, is M your full name? Or does it stand for something?"

(Oh shit he also has like, tons of books in his room. And just random shoes lying around with no socks or laces)

M strode across his room and sat in his chair with a sigh. He relaxed back into it and shut his eyes.
“My name? No, M is not my full name. It does stand for something, I will say.”

@icecubes

(haha thank you)

Rai brought her legs up onto the chair. She frowned at the cryptic answer, but decided to brush it off for now. Ask him your questions. You're curious, right? So ask him. Adventures need questions and questions can have answers.
"Are you human?" Rai said gently, eyeing the man.

M grabbed a book from his desk and curled up in his chair. The book was on butterflies.
“Nope,” He answered, once again, vaguely.

@icecubes

No surprise there. So why are you here? Is that a butterfly?
She kept her gaze on M despite his eyes being focused on the book. "Then what are you?"

(It’s legitimately cannon, btw, that M’s favorite book is a butterfly book.)

M grinned into the pages. She sounded very confused. Apparently grown men can’t enjoy a book on their favorite insect.
“Do you really want to know what I am?”

@icecubes

(THAT IS ADORABLE THANK YOU SO MUCH)

Rai cocked her head, wondering if he was truly able to multi-task that well. I wish I could read a book while holding a conversation. "What a silly question! I ask because I want to know. Otherwise, why would I ask? C'mon, tell me! What are you!" she prompted, throwing her feet off of the chair in excitement.

(Lmao you’re welcome ^-^
I even have the title written down.)

M chuckled softly and flipped a page, running a finger over an intricate painting of a butterfly wing.
“I do not think you want to know.”

@icecubes

(omg whats the title)

Rai smiled, amused with M's words. "Oh, but that's where you're wrong. I wanna know everything. Twelve years of my life spent only knowing science and nothing more. Now I'd like to know it all, including what you are," she challenged, determined to get it out of him.

(The Arts of a Butterfly; The Chronicles of Wingwork Deluxe (Butterfly): Book 3.)

M hummed slowly and flipped the page of his well-worn book. “Unfortunately sheer determination is not going to get you to my species. I still think you don’t want to know what I am.”

@icecubes

(absolutely beautoful :') )

"How can I prove it to you?" Rai asked. She wondered if she should tell him about her 'power.' Maybe if he doesn't tell me about himself, I might as well. He'd understand right? First, I have to try harder to get him to tell me his kind. I have to know.

(Thanks.)

M smirked into his book. He knew through many years of pestering how to hold through on what he was.
“If you want to know so bad, why not just ask politely?” He set his book down, his smirk gone.

@icecubes

(I might have to sleep after this)

Rai was taken aback by his response. Was I not polite? What did I even say? I can't remember. She straightened her back and looked to M. "Sir, if you would, I'd like to know what species you are," Rai chimed. Is that better? Oh, M, my curiosity is killing me!

(Kk)

M set his hands under his chin. “Hmmm… okay, I’ll tell you. I’m a Reader. But it doesn’t affect my work. Apart from when people are talking loud or thinking spastically. It kinda bothers me, really, being one of the more powerful Mind Readers.”
