(Lol. You do that.)
Autumn chewed on her lip. "As soon as Alex gets back, I'll have him get you some ice for that, okay?"
She wasn't going to ask about the marks or the cuts. Not yet, anyway.

Alex was downstairs waiting for the tea to cool down. He didn’t want to give it to the little girl too hot, or she might burn her tongue.
The girl nodded slowly, still rubbing a large fingerprint-shaped bruise on her neck.
Autumn looked the girl over and blinked as she had a sudden thought. "I just had an idea. What if I give you my phone, and you type your responses into it so I can read them?"
The girl shifted on the toilet to see Autumn better and nodded slowly. She liked typing. It was fun for her.
Autum grinned and pulled her phone out of her pocket, handing it to be girl after she opened the notes app.
"So, what's your name, hun?"
The girl looked down at the phone after Autumn’s question and started to type.
“Jillian” was her answer.
“Jillian. That’s a pretty name,” Autumn said softly, smiling at her. “Do people ever call you Jill? Or Jilly?”
Jillian nodded and looked down at the phone. “Jilly” was the answer.
“That’s a cute nickname, Jilly. So, do you have any siblings?” Autumn asked.
Jilly set the phone down and shook her head. She didn’t really want any siblings, and her father said that her mom couldn’t make a baby anymore. She was sad, but her parents said not to be sad.
Autumn gave her a small smile. “Well, at least you get your parents all to yourself then, huh?” she said, trying to make light of the situation.
Jilly set her chin down on the toilet and shook her head. They had gone in the fight. She cried for them when she was being dragged away but they didn’t call back. Thinking about it made her sad and teary eyed again.
Autumn blinked and frowned slightly. “Oh… I’m so sorry…”
Jilly sniffled and wiped her tears away. She missed her parents, but she was glad she was away from the mean man.
“Would you mind — as soon as you’re feeling up to it — telling me what happened?” Autumn asked softly.
Jilly blinked up at the woman. She seemed nice and happy. She probably wasn’t going to hurt her for running away. She nodded slowly.
Autumn gave Jillian a gentle smile and nodded once. “All right. Alex should be back soon with your tea.”
Just as he was mentioned, Alex poked his head into the bathroom with the warm cup of tea. He handed it to the little girl carefully.
“I also got you a cookie.” He handed a cookie he and Autumn made the previous night.
Jilly thanked him softly and took a sip of the tea and nibbled on the cookie.
“Ooh, I forgot about those! Okay, would you mind going to get her an ice pack, too, please? And a cookie for me?” Autumn asked, turning to grin at him almost sheepishly. Because cookies, ya know?
Alex smiled and blew her a kiss. “Of course, love. I’ll be back. Again.” He walked off.
Autumn giggled slightly as she watched him leave. He was too cute sometimes.
Shaking her head in amusement, she turned back to Jillian, still smiling from Alex. “So what grade are you in, Jilly?”
Jilly watched over her cup, sipping at the sweet brown liquid in the cup. She looked up and spoke softly, “I am in fourth grade.”
“How do you like it? Are your teachers nice?” Autumn asked, moving to lean against the sink.
Jilly nodded. “They are very nice. I like them.” She liked school a lot. But her parents warned her, saying that it would get harder.
“That’s good,” Autumn said, nodding slowly. “Have you learned anything interesting?”
Jilly swallowed her mouthful and nodded. “I learned multiplication.”
“A very useful thing to know!” Autumn declared with a grin. “So, have you had any pets at home?”
Jilly shook her head. “Moma was allergic. I’ve always wanted a little rodent. Rodents are nice.”
“Oh? Like what kind of rodent?” Autumn asked, blinking a couple of times. If it was something like a rabbit or a chinchilla, she would definitely agree. Not really mice or rats, though…
Jilly moved on the toilet and picked up her phone. She went to a web browser and opened a new tab.
“It’s… one of these!” She held up the phone to show a cute little guinea pig for sale.
