A black woman stood there, hair dampened down under a bonnet and wearing a blue and white work dress, carrying her luggage. "Ma'am André?"

"I'm she. Can I help you with those?" Jane asked, ignoring the strong racial boundaries with her genuine kindness.

Chadine blinked, Oh, ma'am, you dun' have to, I got it just fine," she gently declined with a kind smile. Jane could see its forced nature, how she had learned to make it seem convincing to please her superiors.

Jane shook her head. "I'm sorry, with all due respect, I don't believe you," she said, slipping some of the heaviest looking bags from the girl's fingers. "Won't you come inside?"

"Yes'm." She exhaled, moving indoors, closing the door behind herself.

"You must be Chadine," Jane said cordially. "Welcome. Don't you want to take your jacket off?"

"Ah, yes'm, maam," she stammered, "I'm Chadine," the woman peeled off her cloak, hung it up in the foyer.

"Can I get you something warm to drink? Do you like tea?" Jane asked motioning towards the dining room that lead to the kitchen.

"Um," she laughed uneasily. "Ah… Tea, I suppose," clearly she wasn't used to being worried or cared for.

Jane smiled. "You can sit down in the dining room if you like, while I make the tea," she invited.

"Yes'm…" She looked very confused, and wandered over to sit.

Jane noted her confusion. "Is there something wrong?"

"No, ma'am, I'm just… Not used to hospitality like this," she smiled.

"After what happened to Cruz, I'm just…" She shook her head slowly.

“I know,” he consoled, pressing a kiss to her temple. “I know.”

Edonine exhaled slowly. "I'm just scared.."

"No, ma'am, I'm just… Not used to hospitality like this," she smiled.

"Well, in that case, I am taking it upon myself that you will enjoy yourself for the time you are here." She smiled at Chadine, but her gaze occasionally flickered around. Where is Captain Simcoe?

"Yes'm," she smiled hugely.

"Would you like anything else with your tea?" she asked kindly. "You can sit down, if you like."

"Um, sugah, please." She replied, sinking down into the chair. She looked over her shoulder, "Isn't there a soldier who lives here?"

Jane stiffened slightly at the mention of this topic. "Yes there is. My husband is away, I'm sure you knew that, and Captain Simcoe is lodging here temporarily."

She looked sideways, "I knows, about that man."

"If you don't mind me asking, what does that mean?"

Chadine shuffled and stood, finding it hard to look her in the eyes. "I know he's violated sum' us women," she murmured.

Jane paled and suddenly had to lean on the wall. "O-Oh…"

"Oh–Miss," guilt stained her expression, "I didn't mean to make you scared. I shoulda been more wiser to my words," she spoke hurriedly.

Jane briefly composed herself. "No, it's fine. I don't like people who don't tell the complete truth." Slowly, she swallowed. "If you don't mind me asking…" The words couldn't seem to form.

Chadine watched her intently, making sure Jane knew she was listening.

"Has he violated you? You don't have to answer if you are uncomfortable," she asked, adding the last part quickly. Her eyes searched her expression for clues. If he had… Jane certainly wasn't going to put up with it.

Chadine looked down, "Nah, ma'am. My sister was.."

Jane slowly approached her and touched her shoulder. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."
