"No," she shook her head, "She wouldn't remember me,"

He laughed warmly, pressing another kiss to her lips.

"Would you want a son or a daughter? I'm curious," Edonine murmured affectionately.

"A daughter," he said after a moment. "But either one would be beyond amazing. What about you?"

"A daughter." She agreed, her chartreuse eyes shining with excitement. "I never thought I would get this far, with anyone…"

"No," she shook her head, "She wouldn't remember me,"

"Why?" Jane asked, cursing herself for being so intrusive. "Pardon me, you don't have to answer if you don't want to."

"She was two when she was taken," Chadine replied in a breath.

She breathed in deep and looked back up. "I know the Lord does what he knows is right fo' us, fo' my children too." Chadine spoke with a resigned sorrow. "God's folk didn't suffer in Egypt fo' nothin." As she grew more comfortable, her natural accent started to wedge itself into place.

"Nuthin' I can do." She spoke, and changed the subject, "D'yuh want me to get a start on dinner?"

"A daughter." She agreed, her chartreuse eyes shining with excitement. "I never thought I would get this far, with anyone…"

"I never thought someone would want to go this far with me," he admitted. "I just want this war to be over so that we can have a real chance at life together…"

"Nuthin' I can do." She spoke, and changed the subject, "D'yuh want me to get a start on dinner?"

"Remember what I said earlier?" Jane asked with a small smile. "Enjoy yourself. I'll take care of you."

She stood on her toes and cupped his cheek. "We will…" She took his hands, "I know it."

"Remember what I said earlier?" Jane asked with a small smile. "Enjoy yourself. I'll take care of you."

A genuine smile took over her darkened features. "Thank you,"

Pierre leaned into her touch. "Edonine……" he whispered, the name sweet on his tongue.

"Pierre.." She giggled back, searching for his lips to kiss rather passionately.

Pierre bent his head and claimed her lips, eyes falling shut as the familiar thrill raced through him.

Edonine grasped his shoulders and hoisted herself up, curling her legs around him– it had been hard to notice, but now he saw clearly how the war had strengthened her, as much as it hardened her.

Pierre turned and took a few steps towards the wall of his shed until her back was pressed gently against it, his mouth never leaving hers.

Edonine lifted her hands and burrowed them into his hair, holding his head by the soft inside of her elbows.

Carefully, not wanting to frighten her, he slipped his tongue over her bottom lip and deepened the kiss.
