Farther down the wall, the french doors that led to the garden sat wide open, inviting in the warm air. Eventually a tentative chicken strutted in, scaly feet making quiet clicky noises on the hardwood floor. Behind it followed a posse of poultry.

Jane closed his fingers around the pouch. "A donation."

Pierre blinked at the trail of birds, glancing at the cockatoo, then back at the chickens. How many birds did she have?

((Yelling at her little brother, probably, somewhere slightly secluded.))

Like an alleyway? Or a street corner? An abandoned building?

((Alleyway))

Sebastian shoved his hands into his pocket, training his eyes on the ground as he walked. His cheekbone, peppered with a motley of freckles and bruises, still ached from a particularly hard punch that had hit its mark, as did his shoulder. It was nothing he wasn’t used to… and neither was the humiliation of being beaten. Hot shame rising in him, he lost his grip on his surroundings and turned into what he thought was a street corner, but ended up being an alleyway.

Annalise was still in full older sister lecture mode, her voice having risen a bit as Oliver looked down shamefully. "Do you have any idea hoe dangerous that was? What if they hadn't even called anyone and dealt with you themselves?" She said, gesturing wildly with her hands. "You can't just steal without guidance or a plan, if you ever would!"

Sebastian’s head snapped up when voices reached his ears. He blinked up at a young woman lecturing a small boy, and immediately realized his mistake. He turned, trying to leave quickly, but one word she had said burned in his ears. Steal.

"No-" She paused, hearing footsteps. She swore quietly under her breath, grabbing her brothers and going to run away.

Pausing, Sebastian turned around again, weighing his options. After a few seconds of mentally grappling with himself, he returned to where he had seen the woman. “Hey,” he called to her, standing a distance away. “I heard you talking… you can steal?”

She froze, nudging her brothers to keep going before turning to face him. "Why do you feel the need to know?" She asked coolly, trying to keep her composure.

Sebastian brought out his hands so that she could see he wasn’t carrying a weapon, crossing his arms and shifting his weight. “I need help,” he said simply.

"With what, if I may know?" Annalise asked, interest piqued. Not many people asked her for help with stealing. "Do you need anything specific?"

Sebastian approached the woman cautiously, looking her over. She appeared to be… well, not very well off. He could see why she might resort to stealing, especially with those two children. We’re they hers? Or just siblings?

Gesturing to his dirty clothes and bruised face, he sighed. “I got caught last time I tried to steal. I need to know how to do it properly. There was something in the papers, about that man struck by lightning. Apparently a woman tried to rob him earlier. You fit the description.”
(It’s a really crappy reason sorry, I don’t know what else to say)

"Word spreads fast, doesn't it?" She said with a soft smile. "Do you have any idea of the basics?" She asked, tone now a bit kinder.

“Don’t act suspicious?” he tried, his tone making him sound a lot more open than he actually was. “Small movements so they don’t notice? Get out fast before they see your face?”

She nodded. "Good enough. But also, taking small bits and putting in in a pocket or bag of your own on the off chance that they catch you. While you run."

Sebastian heaved a well-placed sigh, forcing his posture to relax further. Just act casual, she won’t help you if you’re uptight. “I understand t in theory, but not in practice.”

She took out the handkerchief wrapped bread. "Here, practice with me. Just grab this, and break off a piece as you're running away."

Sebastian hesitated briefly, but quickly leaped forward, breaking off a piece of the bread and running off in the opposite direction.

She nodded. "Good, good…"
