The bird panted for a few seconds, before its feathers settled down and he looked at Pierre.

Oh my god. Holy sh*t. Pierre ran a hand through his hair, mind racing. Oh god. Poor Edonine.

"Hi~!" he squealed.

Pierre flinched, caught by surprise. "Hi?"

The bird bobbed its head, its foreboding muttering all but a memory now.

For the fourth time that day, Pierre reached out to stroke it, still incredibly unsettled.

The bird seemed so much more calm now. Almost welcomed the affection through the cage bars.

Pierre stroked him softly, incredibly tempted to unlock the cage.

The bird whimpered softly.

Giving in to temptation, he looked around, searching for the key.

It sat on a nearby shelf.

He picked up the key, unlocking the cage door slowly.

The bird hopped out, flared out its wings to fly and perch on his head.

Pierre stiffened, wincing. Eventually, he relaxed, but stayed still.

"What a pretty day, Delta!" he cooed. "Pretty Delta!"

Pierre couldn't help a smile. "Pretty bird.." he echoed.

"Pretty bird," he echoed Pierre.

Pierre chuckled lightly. “Modest, too.”

"You're awake," Edonine croaked sleepily from the hall. Her chartreuse eyes looked dull in the faint candlelight, hair stringy and messy with fitful sleep. Her index finger sat curled through the ring of a candle plate, the dingy flame trembling back and forth. Delta lifted his crest to greet his owner.

"There's nobody to contest my love for you," André spoke quietly. "I promise you,"

She looked into his eyes boldly. "I trust you," she whispered. Her voice was soft but her words were powerful.

John glanced down. "If I tell you, you cannot tell anyone else. My life depends on that,"

Jane's eyes widened, but she nodded. "I promise. I swear."

He pulled her down to sit on a rickety bench. Bent close to whisper with quiet shame, "I was in love with a man.. for the better half of a decade,"

This wasn't what she had been expecting. "Oh?"

He was going red already. "He loved me too. He was a sailor,"

Jane nodded, listening.

He swallowed dryly, "He was hung on the charge of sodomy. I should have died the same fate, but…" he trailed off, his fingers laced together in shame.

Jane ran her fingers up his arm. "I'm sorry," she whispered.

His eyes flickered over to her softer face. "My father bailed me out," he whispered. "I wanted.. so badly to die by his side, Jane," he whispered. "I had nobody else to love,"

Jane nodded slowly.
