"Hunter!" Kenzie exclaimed, looking to her boyfriend. Then, looking to her father she exclaimed, "Dad!"
John flinched; she'd never called him "Dad" before, it was always "Daddy." She must be really upset if she was calling him "Dad," but he ignored her and continued on.
"Oh? And what is that supposed to mean?" he questioned.
(It took me forever to think of an insult… Which I'm not even using in this post… Sorry…)
Hunter stuffed his hands in his pockets, looking at John straight in the eyes.
“The one I remember clearly is how you judge people without really knowing them,” he said, chin raised up. “As I can see right now, my father wasn’t lying.”

John scoffed. "I wouldn't trust a word coming from the mouth of that fox-hearted, mange-ridden man," he snapped.

“As much of a fox my father is, at least he thinks before he acts,” Hunter retorted coldly. He looked at Kenzie, his gaze softening.
“I think I should leave before I say something that hurts you.”

Hunter's remark lit a fire in John's eyes, but he, too, looked at Kenzie and the fire went out. He let out a shaking breath and looked down at his hands.
"I'm so sorry," he whispered to Kenzie, not meeting her gaze. "I think you should go."
Kenzie's eyebrows furrowed, both in annoyance and concern. She looked back and forth between Hunter and John, torn. She lo– really liked Hunter, but she had missed her father so much in the past six years. She didn't know what to do, and it hurt that she could even think about leaving either of them at a time like this.

At Kenzie’s confused look, he elaborated. “Is what you’re thinking right now, aren’t you?” Chuckling, he shook his head. “Obviously you should stay with your dad. I’ll make sure your car gets to your house properly, eh?”

"Sunshine–" her father started, using his old pet name for her.
Kenzie looked at him, pain fighting with anger and sadness for dominance in her eyes. "I'm sorry," she whispered, "but I– I can't stay here. Not after what I just saw." She quickly embraced him, speaking softly into his ear, "I love you, Daddy, but I have to go."
And with that said, she stepped back towards Hunter, taking his hand to keep hers from shaking.

Hunter bit his lower lip as he have Kenzie’s hand a light squeeze.
“Are you sure, Kenz?” he murmured softly for only Kenzie to hear. “If you think I’ll get hurt, you don’t have to worry about that. He’s your father; you wanted to see him after six years. You can always see me, every day. But it’s not the same for your father.”

“She won’t be angry for long,” he muttered before turning his heel and catching up to Kenzie.

Kenzie walked down the hall, down every flight of stairs she had come up, and back out the front door of the apartment building. She didn't bother looking behind her for Hunter; she knew he was following her without having to see him. When she got to Hunter's car, she stood and waited for him to unlock it, staring off into the distance.
When Hunter reached Kenzie, he felt a little bad for letting his anger get the better of him.
"I'm sorry," he mumbled as he unlocked his car. "About what I said. To your dad."

"Forget about it," Kenzie muttered, climbing into the car. She shook her head and laughed darkly. "I shouldn't have made you come up. It was stupid of me. Of course, my overprotective father would find some way to try and persuade me to stay away from you."

"Luna, why did you come here?" Matthew asked her. He turned his body toward her, his nose above her head, almost touching her hair.
"Forget about it," Kenzie muttered, climbing into the car. She shook her head and laughed darkly. "I shouldn't have made you come up. It was stupid of me. Of course, my overprotective father would find some way to try and persuade me to stay away from you."
"No, it was my fault," Hunter shook his head. "I should've controlled my anger better."

Kenzie sighed and looked out the window. "It's not your fault. I should've known that he'd freak out about you. He used to tell me about the things your dad did to him, telling me not to hang out with guys like him. I should have remembered that before dragging you into this mess."
"He's my father," Hunter muttered. "I am like him, as much as I hate to admit it."
Kenzie gave him a look, making him bite his lower lip.
"Don't make that face, Kenzie," Hunter sighed, pulling Kenzie towards him, trapping her between his chest and his arms.
