Rylan smiled when she saw Santiago. She rubbed her eyes tiredly and looked up at him. "Good morning, Santiago." She glanced around the room. The cameras were off and none of the guards or Alec seemed to be near the window.

Santiago took the small bottle of pills from his pocket and handed them to her. “That’s for if your leg or whatever starts to hurt.”
She took it. "I'll probably need them a lot. Thank you." Rylan looked up at him and smiled.

“Of course,” Santiago said, smiling. “How did you sleep?”
"Better." She replied, but her eyes said otherwise. Their amber color looked even more faded and tired.

Santiago frowned, and said, “It doesn’t seem like it.”
"I keep thinking about the execution." She answered, looking down at her legs. Her dark hair fell around her face.

“Hey..” Santiago said softly, reaching out to brush the hair from her face. “We don’t know that it will take place for sure.”
She looked up at him, her eyes worried. "It might. They can't let me go."

“We’ll try and find a way, okay? Sure, you’ve done questionable things in the past, but that doesn’t mean you deserve to die,” Santiago said calmly.
She nodded and reached out, holding his hand. Her gaze seemed more relaxed.

Santiago held her hand gently, rubbing the back of it with his thumb. “You should really eat.”
She nodded. "Food sounds good."

Santiago nodded to the tray sitting by her and ran a hand through his messy hair.
She picked up the apple sitting on the tray and took a bite. Rylan turned back towards Santiago. "Which sector were you born in?"

“I grew up in the Ruby Sector,” Santiago explained, “what about you?”
"Tanagashi." She motioned to her eyes, which looked slightly asian. "My dad was from Ruby."

“Oh, cool,” Santiago said, smiling. “My mom was from Ruby, Dad was from the Cuban area.” Which made sense, as he was obviously Hispanic.
She nodded. "You're dad, was he a Republic soldier?"

“Yeah, he was. Retired now, though,” Santiago explained.
"So, you went to college and trained to become a Republic solider."

“Exactly. Wanted to follow in his footsteps,” Santiago said. “But I want to know about you..”
"What do you want to know?" She grinned.

“Why do you choose to do all this maybe?” Santiago asked, matching her grin.
She sighed. "The Republic is my home, but they took everything I loved away. I had never taken my test, but my older sister had. She never came home. When soldiers killed my family, I ran. I was only nine, trying to survive in the slums." She stopped to look up at Santiago.
"I never forgave the Republic for what they had done. At nine, I promised myself that I would make life hard for all the soldiers that were helping the Elector. But then I met you. . ." Rylan trailed off.

“Oh god… Rylan, I’m so sorry,” Santiago said softly, squeezing her hand gently.
"It's okay." She replied, giving him a small smile. It pained her to see Santiago sad.

Santiago sighed slowly and nodded once. “Hopefully we can get this figured out, then, and things can get better.” He had a feeling that the hole was completely false. He knew he may have been thinking in a naive way, but he wanted to believe things could be okay.
She nodded, hoping it could be true. "The guards came in yesterday. They said my execution would happen in five days. I don't want to die. . . especially when I just met you." Rylan said, her eyes full of worry.

Santiago bit the inside of his cheek anxiously. “I’ll do whatever I can, this can’t happen.” His grip on her hand tightened slightly
