“You think I can change? I can’t and neither can Harris.”, she said, angrily. She sighed and her gaze softened a little. “I used to have hope.”, Yuki said as she tried to remember what hope felt like.

"Just let me help you, Yuki. Let me be your hope. Please." Rowan grabbed onto Yuki's hand, squeezing it for comfort.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

Yuki couldn’t change her mind. Couldn’t. She would kill Harris and Rowan would try to stop her. They would both die when the President’s soldiers came. “For the last time, you can’t come with me.”, she snapped. She pulled her hand away from Rowan’s. Yuki turned her back so she wouldn’t have to see her hurt face.

"Then… Then what's gonna happen to me, Yuki? I-I don't have anywhere left to go? What if Petree and Armand don't make it? Kodiak broke out. He won't come back for me. I can't be all alone. You can't do this to me." Rowan stammered, holding back sobs.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

“Do what to you? Keep you from witnessing the bloody slaughter of Harris? My death? Keep you from dying?”, Yuki raised her voice.

Rowan flinched back, looking away. "If you don't want to live then I don't either." She sniffed. "I'm coming with you and that's it. I don't care what happens. We're doing this together."

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

“I’m not worth it. You have no reason do die. If you die because of me you die because of nothing.”, Yuki said, her back still turned.

"Do I have to prove it to you? Is that what you want? Because I-… I'll do it right now. I'll get myself killed right in front of you." Rowan's voice shook, but she stayed resolute.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

“No you will not!”, Yuki shouted. Soldiers turned to look at them.

"Then let me come with you." Rowan demanded. "Let me come with you or I'll do it right now." Her eyes hardened, focusing on Yuki's turned back.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

Yuki whirled around. “If you wish to die then fine!” She knew what it was like to have death thoughts. She wasn’t going to let Rowan, who had a meaningful life, go down the same path as her. Rowan’s decision hit her hard emotionally, but of course she wasn’t going to show that.

Rowan pulled Yuki into a tight hug as soon as she turned around. "I hope you understand." She whispered softly.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

This time Yuki didn’t resist the hug. “I understand you shouldn’t waste your life. It was as good as it could get in this war.”, Yuki said. “You are a good person.”, she added quietly.

"I'm not allowed to be considered a good person until I save both our lives." Rowan grinned weakly.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

“Then I’ll consider you an amazing person.”, Yuki compromised.

"You've gotta survive, Yuki. Who's gonna help me dye my hair purple?" She jested. She was so tired of this war. So tired of pain and crying.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

"Someone who's actually good at it.", Yuki half-heartedly joked. "You'll be fine." Yuki got up and went over to a soldier with a walkie-talkie in her belt. She looked over at Petree and Armand in the arena and pretended to search her belt for a walkie-talkie. "Dang it! I don't have my walkie-talkie with me. Could I use yours?", she asked the solier.
"Um… Who are you?"
"You don't know who I am?! How could you not know who I am." The soldier looked confused. "Would you rather talk this incident out with the President? I don't think so!" Yuki was good at intimidating people. The soldier took the walkie-talkie out of her belt and handed it to her.
"My apologies miss."
"That's ma'm."
"Oh, sorry ma'm."

Rowan trailed silently behind Yuki, keeping her head low and pretended to be a beaten down prisoner.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

Yuki took the walkie-talkie. "This battle is boring! Make them fight! At least send another official to get a fight started." Yuki would watch for where the high-ranked follower would walk out and that would be their first clue as to where President Harris would be. She slipped the walkie-talkie into her belt. The soldier was about to protest, but when Yuki gave her a glare she immediately bit her lip and looked down.

Rowan snickered a bit as Yuki ordered around officers. It was easy to forget they were going to die soon. She clung to Yuki and waited for her instructions.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

Yuki noticed the official come out a steel door in the middle of the arena. That’s where they were going. She walked towards it, acting like any soldier would. Yuki knew any high-ranked follower or torture camp worker would recognize her, so she put her hair up and tucked it under her hood. It would have to be enough.

"You ready?" Rowan whispered, now walking beside Yuki. She took in the arena one last time, watching the cheering soldiers and wondering how so many people could find amusement out of something so wretched. Everyone here was broken. The only way she could fix this was at the source.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

“Always been ready. You?”, Yuki responded. A soldier walked out the door and Yuki caught it. The metal felt cold in her hands and the door was thick. Meant to keep people out. She walked inside to find a dim lit hallway.

"Y-Yeah…" Rowan wasn't ready. She wasn't ready to loose her best friend. She wasn't ready to die. She wasn't ready to talk to the cruelest woman in the world. She wasn't ready to imagine the looks on her parents faces when they heard what happened. "Let's do this." She trailed after Yuki, steeling her nerves.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

Yuki walked through the hallway looking for the most heavily guarded door and watching where the soldiers went and came. She felt alive and living, knowing as well that she wouldn’t be much longer. It gave her a sense of peace to know she would be somewhere else soon. Anywhere but the Smoke Society and it’s evil. There was still a little voice in her head that told her not to quit. The voice had always been there, but it was quiet compared to the longing for the pain and sadness and most of all, the memories to be gone. She was chained to those memories and what they brought.

Rowan's heart was pounding so loud she could hear it. She grabbed weakly onto Yuki's hand for comfort. She wanted nothing more than to run away like a coward. Maybe her and Yuki could form some kind of business. They could dye hair! And they'd open up a little rebel shop and get all the best colors. They wouldn't make a lot but it'd be enough. Enough to get by. Enough to survive this war. Rowan knew she was a screw up, a mistake, a burden on the battlefield. So maybe it was better things ended this way. She'd die a hero, right? What more could anyone ask for?

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

Yuki silently yawned. She didn’t sleep much. Night was her only time of peace. And the nightmares were bad. Would death be like sleeping? Yuki had been told about something called Heaven. It sounded wonderful. If only she could go there, but she didn’t deserve to. Her mind ran a mile a minute. Then she saw it. The door on the very end of the hall was definitely the one. It looked like all the other doors, besides a few guards standing by it. Yuki discreetly pointed to the door to let Rowan know that was undoubtedly where they were going.

Rowan squeezed Yuki's hand as tightly as possible before nodded. This is it, this is it, this is it. She was on the verge of hyperventilating, but forced herself to focus on the concrete floor. Now or never.

@m1dn1g7t_ri0ts_13

They approached the door together. Yuki let go of Rowan’s hand, but gave her a reassuring smile. She nodded at the guards. “I’m bringing this trouble-maker to the President.” Just let me in! Don’t question me! The gaurds narrowed their eyes. “What’s the code?” The code? Wait… I guess I could try something.
“10974”, Yuki answered. It came almost naturally because she had heard it in camp. Without hesitation, the gaurds let them in and it surprised her.

Rowan stared up at Yuki in shock. How did she know that code? Her heart slammed against her ribs painfully. The president was in this room. Rowan took a deep breath, letting Yuki tug her forward in a show of being a tough guard. I can talk her out of this. I can do this. Or I'll die trying.
