Middle School Romance [OPEN!!!!]

Toby shrugged and looked at his hands, used to people saying that he wasn't the type to do a lot of things. "I mean, I'm intrigued by something that could possibly explode everywhere." He finally said, looking up at Jil and smiling.

"Explosions are pretty entertaining. It's especially satisfactory when you know you made it happen." Jil said.

Toby nodded and played with a pencil in his hands as he blew a few strands of hair out of his face. "So, we're gonna do elephant toothpaste?"

Jil nodded. She tried not to pay attention to the annoying voice in the back of her head, that just wouldn't stop gushing about how cute Toby was.

"Awesome." Toby said, a boyish grin spreading on his face. "We're going to make some stuff explode!" He exclaimed, setting his pencil down on the desk in front of him.

"Okay." Jil said. "We'll need hydrogen peroxide, saturated potassium iodide solution, and liquid dishwashing detergent."

"Uh," Toby started, rubbing the back of his neck. "Where do I get those?"

"I have no idea." Jil said, laughing. "I know the home ec teacher has dishwashing detergent, but I don't know about the others."

"Hydrogen peroxide and saturated potassium iodide solution. . ." Toby sighed, resting his chin on the palm of his hand as he looked at Jil. "We can find that on amazon or somethin'."

"So what now?" Jil asked.

Toby shrugged, still watching Jil as a soft smile tugged the corners of his lips up.

Jil slowly smiled, an idea forming in her brain. "I have an idea." she said. She stood up from her seat, and motioned for Toby to follow her. "Mrs. J, we're stepping out for a second." she told the teacher, who absentmindedly nodded, concentrating on her phone.

Toby followed behind Jil, raising a brow in question.

Jil walked into the hallway, heading for the office. After many twists and turns through the long hallways, they arrived at the office. Jil greeted the secretary warmly. "Hi Mr. F, Can we borrow the keys to the basement? It's for an assignment." she asked, smiling sweetly. Mr. F nodded, handing her the keys. He wished her luck on the assignment, and they were off again through the long hallways.

"What are we going to do in the basement?" Toby asked curiously as he sidled up next to her.

"So I can murder you and no one will ever find your body." Jil said, completely straight faced as she kicked open the stubborn basement door. She flicked a switch on, and light illuminated a long staircase. She started down the stairs, and tripped multiple times on uneven steps. She looked back to make sure Toby was following her. "Careful, the steps are uneven."

"I hope that was a joke." Toby answered, chuckling lightly. He followed after her, stepping down the rickety staircase.

They finally reached the bottom, which seemed to dissolve into darkness. Jil ran her hand along the wall till she found the light switch, and light flooded the basement. There were piles of junk everywhere, there were old dresses, marching band hats, textbooks, and rows of old fashioned desks. "Just think what treasures you could find in here," Jil said. "I've always imagined it as a story, like… what resides in the abandoned basement." She glanced at Toby, and smiled.

"It looks amazing. . ." Toby breathed out, walking over to a cardboard box. He chose a tall, crimson marching band hat and placed it on his head. It smoothed his sandy blond hair down, causing it to fall over his eyes. "How do I look?"

Jil blushed, and giggled. "You look adorable!" she said.

"I do?" Toby laughed, walking over and placing the hat on Jil's head instead. "Now you look even cuter."

Jil turned even redder, and stammered as she tried to reply. "Um-thank.. you." she said, looking at her feet.

Toby laughed, blushing too as he looked down at her, unsure of what to do. "Sorry, I get nervous around girls." He finally said after a long pause, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Um. yeah.. I-I kinda get nervous around.. boys." Jil stuttered.

"Well, I think you're doing great." Toby replied as he smiled. Jil looked so cute, with her rose gold hair falling around her face and the marching band hat on her head. He leaned down and pressed a kiss to her cheek. "You should wear that hat more often."

Jil forgot how to breathe for a second. She blushed. She took the hat off, hugging it to her chest, and smiled. "Maybe I will." she said.

Toby grinned and glanced down at one of the boxes. Inside were two wooden swords. He kneeled down and grabbed them, handing one to Jil. "Sword fight?"

"Definitely." Jil smiled, and took the sword from Toby.
