Soon after she left her homeworld, however, Ruby found herself in the sights of a Caddisian Proliferator named Xiphys. He captured her ship and took her hostage, pulling her into the unfolding scheme Xiphys was spearheading. Xiphys injected Ruby with an experimental serum full of nanobots, which worked like a technological virus that wrought havoc on her DNA. A potent and excruciating transformation took place within her body, and Ruby found herself enveloped in an embrace of fire.

Although certain she was doomed, Ruby quickly discovered that the flames seemed to be originating from her very body—the fire around her did not harm her. Though the heat was intense, in their shared shock and confusion she managed to fight off Xiphys and escape, barely able to comprehend what had transpired.

She was compelled to rush back to her home to warn her friends and family of the looming Caddisian threat. Upon learning what had happened to her, the other Skyren considered no other option than to shun her, unable to reconcile what they viewed as an egregious technological transgression. Heartbroken, Ruby was forced to leave once again.

Soon she too would receive an invitation to the Razor's Isle Fighting Tournament which she accepted.

In Volume 1, Ruby wears a dark blue dress with a studded belt, and a bright red ribbon around her neck tied in a large bow. She also wears a pair of black ballet-style shoes. Occasionally she dons a black cape with a jagged edge.
