Peter was born on the western border of the Kellad Forest, which is next to the Zakret Mountains. He began to learn magic at a young age, learning with a monk from the mountains. He chose to learn illusion magic, even though it's rare. Peter and his family moved east to the coast after people from Uvblanda took their land. Peter later traveled to Dubali for an opportunity to steal from some of the richest people in the world. Here, Peter met Charles, the son of the richest people in the world. While Charles's parents supported Jericho and the Uvblandic monarchy, Charles was against it. Charles led public protests against the Dubalian and Uvblandic monarchy. When the protests grew so public and famous that they reached Jericho, Jericho ordered that Charles be killed and anyone involved was to be jailed. Guards from Uvblanda killed Charles, making it a public show, and right in front of Peter, too. They then attacked Peter, giving him his scar. Peter ran, right into Esperanza, who was still a slave in Dubali at the time. Adarius saved them. Peter disappeared into the badlands of Dubali. Peter's mom died shortly after, of pneumonia. This prompted Peter to go back home and take care of his siblings and tell his stories of the horrors he experienced in Dubali. A few months before the start of the story, Peter's younger siblings, Elizabeth and Edward, were taken by the leader of the Chainlink Crew, Patrick Kempt, for ransom. Kempt had heard of Peter's stories and knew Peter was a thief, and a good one at that. He wants Peter to steal King Florian's pitch pipe, and won't give Peter's siblings back until he does.
