Her eyes. She has a jagged scar that starts at her right lower jaw and goes up her right cheek, ending at the corner of her eye (gained in a fight with the Thunder Bay Terrors, who she defeated singlehandedly the year she was able to buy a ship).

Her crew. She would do anything for them. She wants to see the kingdom of Uvblanda fall and will do anything to see that it does. She would also do almost anything for either money or revenge. Loves her home town in Tellunia and would give her life to protect it.

Being so loyal to her crew that she would die for them. Hides her emotions. Peter is literally her weakness.

Hates anyone from the kingdom of Uvblanda. Dislikes the rulers of the other kingdoms.

Knows all kinds of magics, which is very hard to do in this world (and also illegal). Very persuasive. She can whistle extremely loud. An excellent sailor, learned from a young age and continued to work with ships and boats even when she was enslaved.

She just pours over books, files, and documents, any she can find. She also loves to sail the open water. Often trains.

Loyal and kind, but only to those she knows and loves. Considered brave and dangerous because she sails the ocean. Most Valtaernans don't like the ocean because of its association with the evil ocean goddess. To others, she is a fierce pirate dedicated only to destroying the natural order. She is intimidating and feared thorughout Valtaerna. You could totally compare her to the ocean. Tranquil one moment, raging and storming the next. She would never kill someone if it didn't profit her. Probably chaotic good. Probably ENTJ or INTJ.

Bad at winking. Stands with her hands on her hips. When she has a sword or gun in her hands, she likes to gesture with it. Usually projects when she's angry; by shooting something, punching something, yelling at someone. She lets people know she isn't a force to be reckoned with. Otherwise, she tries to hide her emotions. She cries in secret, gives herself pep talks in the mirror, and never clues anyone in to her possible romantic feelings for another person. Usually has a neutral look on her face, but you can always tell when she's thinking. If she's bored, she'll mess with her hair. Walks around with her hands clasped behind her back. Points at people for emphasis. Clenches her fists a LOT.

If she was living in our society today, she would be against Republicans. She doesn't respect the rulers of the kingdoms very much because of what they let happen to her and her sister. She's also basically a criminal, so she has to stay away from the law.

She believes the legends of the goddesses are true, but she doesn't believe they are goddesses. She simply thinks they are Valtaernans so powerful with magic that they ascended to immortality and are all powerful (which, really is what they are).

Esperanza was born in the Tellunian region to the ocean goddess and a blacksmith. She learned how to sail here, began when she was very young. Her father made her earrings for her sixteenth birthday but was never able to give it to her. Esperanza's sister, Mariah, was born three years after her. The Black sisters were taken away from Tellunia during a slave raid and were taken to Uvblanda, the tundra region. Mariah gave Esperanza the earrings on her sixteenth birthday. Shortly after, Esperanza was sold to someone in Dubali, and was separated from Mariah. Here, she met Peter Armstrong. They spoke long enough to get each other's names and help each other out a little bit. After Esperanza was freed (by Adarius) it took her four years to get enough money to buy her own ship. She then sailed around Valtaerna, recruiting people for her ship, first Adarius, then Court, then Li. They conducted a robbery of the biggest silver bank in Valtaerna, coining their name: the Crew of the Silver Spirit. Esperanza located Mariah and made her first mate. Now they sail around Valtaerna, stopping slave ships and upholding their title.

Magic: it's like she majored in magic and was the best student of her class

Experienced with water magic because her mother is the ocean goddess (it comes naturally to her), but learned fire magic the most while in Dubali. She has been training with other types of magic behind the government's (and her team's) back. Learning more than one type of magic is illegal on Valtaerna, which is why the Council of Four excludes Queen Jericho.

Fingerless gloves. Wears a bandanna over her hair. Sometimes wears a cool hat if she wants to be dramatic. Wears long boots. Loves herself a big feather on a captain hat. Looks good in purple. Has a reddish colored sash that she wears around her waist; it channels her fire magic.

Later in the story, her right arm is cut off.
