History

Background

James Tyler O'Connor was born November 5, 1947, the first child of John and Felicity O'Connor. Both John and Felicity had served in the second world war on the European front; John, a foot soldier, and Felicity, a nurse. The family settled on Elliott Island shortly before James' birth. Throughout his childhood, James was particularly close to his mother. In 1950, a younger brother, William, joined the family.

The family lived the All-American ideal in a modest house on the East shore, though John often struggled with trauma from the war. James was protective toward his younger brother, and often looked after him. The boys enjoyed broomball on Patrick Lake in the winter, and football in the summer. They would also frequently ride their bikes to go get ice cream, or get into trouble with friends.

At the ages of ten and seven, James and Will were playing broomball with friends when the ice gave way and Will fell through. James dove in to save his brother, however the current moved the boys away from the hole, and they remained in the freezing water for 30 minutes before authorities found them. Both boys fell incredibly ill, though James' condition was far worse, and his parents tearfully asked a priest to grant James his last rites. As the priest spoke, James woke suddenly, and made a speedy recovery. Doctors were baffled, as according to all limits of the human body, both boys should have died that day. James walked away with major hearing loss in his left ear, but nonetheless with his life.

In 1961, James began his education at East Elliott High School, where he joined the football team and later became a running back. To cope with his deaf ear, the team devised a series of basic hand signals to communicate with him from his left side. He developed close friendships with some of his fellow players, particularly Thomas "Tommy" Duncan and Michael "Cassie" Castellano. He also began dating a classmate named Nancy Newman. Nancy was best friends another girl named Linda Porter, and the five often spent time together.

On October 2, 1964, after a football game, the group of friends went to Tommy's house to play cards when a broadcast depicting the struggles of American troops in Vietnam. James was deeply troubled by the broadcast, and settled on making his father proud by enlisting after graduation. He was convinced that he could serve his country as well as improve the treatment of the Vietnamese people by US soldiers. Though his father was horrified by the idea, he spent the rest of the year attempting to guide his son through such a decision. James graduated in June of 1965, and broke up with Nancy before enlisting. He left for basic training in August, leaving his family heartbroken.

In October, he graduated basic training. On the day he left the island to go back to base after visiting his family, he had a peculiar encounter with who he would later learn was Lyra Marrow. As he waited for the ferry, the two ran into one another for only a split second. James was transfixed by Lyra, and felt as though he knew her, though he did not recognize her incredibly scarred face. She dropped a talisman on the ground, but when he stood to return it to her, she'd already vanished. He got on the ferry, and began to sketch her before he forgot what she looked like, however the drawing was whipped out of his hand by the wind and fell into the sea. He left for Vietnam days later.

He was assigned to Charlie Squad 92 with seven other soldiers; Private Robert "Bobby" Norman, Private First Class Johnny Olson, Private First Class David "Twitch" Lee, Corporal Gary "Jeejay" Johnson, Private Daniel Briggs, and the commanding officer, Staff Sergeant Joseph Ryan. Upon his deployment, he was the newest member of the squad, though Johnny had gotten there just six months prior. In his first weeks in Vietnam, he was quick to arrogance and questioning, and rightly earned the frequently used title of "FNG" (fucking new guy). He quickly learned his place after several pranks and disciplinary actions, and meshed well with the rhythm of the squad.

James became particularly close to Twitch and Briggs, and was called "Tyler" for his middle name. The three became inseparable, both on battlefield and encampment. The men would often share stories while playing cards. Twitch and Briggs would often inquire about the mysteries of Elliott Island, and James would tell them stories of the strange happenings on the island.
