Despite doing so since he was 15 years old, it's uncertain how Theo Leibold initially came to pilot the Balmung. The most common theory is nepotism—his parents had ties to a higher-up in the chain of command, if they weren't directly involved in the Balmung's development themselves.

Theo is known for a few things: piloting the first ever mecha unit, his ability to adapt and develop new tactics on the fly, a love of miniskirts, and a perceived disregard for strategy. His skill as a pilot isn't lacking, but even his staunchest supporters are willing to admit he can act without consideration, and those less fond of him tend to add "insubordinate," "egotistical," and "childish." These criticisms only escalate with the increasing belief that the Balmung—and Theo by extension—is unable to enter battle without damaging its surroundings.

However, he's also quite accomplished; he destroyed a kaiju called Galarax on his first sortie, with no information on the creature itself. His track record for fending off kaiju is flawless, and his experience with the Balmung lets him perform tasks belying its size and strength. Theo is intelligent, having obtained a degree in robotics sometime between the ages of 14 and 17, and his character record is relatively spotless; he commits no crimes, doesn't get into (physical) fights, and generally refrains from harassing female associates.

His "ego" as it were isn't entirely unearned, and rarely amounts to much more than boasting. Theo does take his job at least somewhat seriously, and gladly answers any call for help.
