It houses the remains of King Sombra's heart, his soul kept alive through Lorelei's/Moon Spark's magic. Whosoever wears the amulet may become possessed by him, and/or have their magic powers increased.
Notes
King Sombra's heart was found just outside the Crystal Mountains by ponies from the Empire. Thinking it was just a unusually beautiful gem, as the rest of his body was buried under ice and fallen rocks, they took a piece of his heart as a gift for the soon-to-be king and queen of the Crystal Empire.
