Geography
Underneath the canyon, it is dark and swampy, with bits of sun shining through the odd caverns through the rock.
Farms are not possible to own within Demetra's Might, but fruit orchards are common. Many tree fruits are cultivated here or found in the wild, including but not limited to: bananas, loquats, durians, persimmons, and figs.
Demetra's Might is warm and humid, but the numerous trees and the underside of the canyon provide adequate shade and protection from the sun. The air is more arid toward the top of the canyon.
History
Legend has it that sometime during the Agian occupation, the goddess of flora, Demetra, came across the early ancestors of the Keronij. They were a group of pilgrims searching for a place to call home, but the blaring heat of the sun and the dryness of the canyon was becoming too much for them. One of the pilgrims approached her cautiously and asked her, "Excuse me, could we take refuge under your bough momentarily? I fear one of my friends may succumb to this heat if we stay in it much longer."
Though she didn't often meddle in the affairs of fauna, something in her made her feel pity for the pilgrims--thus she sat down. The pilgrims quickly set themselves in her shadow. "Thank you, this is very kind of you." said the pilgrim.
As they recuperated, Demetra asked them, "What will you do when you depart once more?"
The pilgrims replied, "We will keep searching for a new home."
"This canyon stretches for miles. Ye will not have my shade to protect you from the sun." she warned them.
"It is a risk we must take if we are to succeed." one pilgrim told her. "We have faced plagues, bandits, monsters, and nature itself to make it this far. Many of us have perished along the way--parents, siblings, children, friends, and loved ones have lost their lives for the sake of finding sanctuary. We cannot give up lest we leave their deaths in vain."
This sparked a familiar feeling in Demetra's heart--one that she had not felt in eons. As she stood back up, she stated, "Then allow me to end your long journey here."
She brought the pilgrims to the river at the base of the canyon. Demetra then summoned hundreds of walking ents, and with a mighty heave lifted the canyon up to create an open cavern underneath. The ents then held up the canyon's base, and simultaneously hardened up as they went dormant. Demetra let go of the canyon, then dipped her barky finger into the river. With a quick incantation, the land surrounding the river became lush with vegetation.
The pilgrims couldn't believe their eyes.
"This is my gift to you." she stated. "Keep my children safe, and they will keep you safe. This is all I ask."
Without another word, Demetra left the pilgrims--continuing to wander the world.
The pilgrims, as a homage to her kindness, decided henceforth for the canyon to be known to all as Demetra's Might.
