"Spell" is a catch-all term for any manipulation of Magical Energy to serve some purpose. Performing a spell is often referred to as "casting," and the performer is called the "caster." Those that regularly make use of spells, especially within one or two specific disciplines, are often called "mages."

Spells can be used with any type of energy, so long as the caster possesses that type through one of several methods:

• A corresponding Soul Core


• Naturally occurring in the soul, such as Life Force


• Some other enabling device, such as a Crystal

With this requirement met, the sorts of spells that one is able to cast vary widely, and are generally only limited by the time and energy required, and the mage's imagination.

Repeated casting will induce Magical Fatigue. More powerful spells will usually require significantly more time to gather all the required energy and carry a higher risk of exhausting the caster, to the point of fainting in the most extreme cases.

To cast a spell, the mage instructs the energy in question to perform the desired action using their mind. Incantations, tools, etc. are not strictly required, but some mages prefer to use them to better focus their intentions.

Because spellcasting focuses heavily on the mind's eye, those with strong aphantasia can struggle in fast-paced combat situations. Those who are more literal-minded may be more at home using their magic in Magitech or Alchemy.
