Emrys ran down the hallway and out of the building. The person at reception yelled after them, something about no running, but she ignored them. The building where their math class is was located quite close to the dorms, which was a small piece of luck. "It's that one," Emrys said, pointing at a one-story building made out of brick. "Room 3."

"Oh phew," Loren gave a sigh of relief. "Thanks again, Emrys." She walked into the class only to stop short. "Hey guys, why is the teacher black? I don't mean to sound racist, but the teacher is, um, literally black." The teacher was enveloped in dark shadows that moved around him and never stilled, but strayed too far from the teacher's body.

Zuri has followed them kind of frantically just hoping she had her math stuff in her bag.
“Hmm… maybe magic?” Zuri said sarcastically after looking at the teacher herself and after Loren’s remark.
“Probably death or dark magic,” she then notes more seriously.

"Well, looks like math will be more magical than I thought it was going to be. At least, the teacher will be." Emrys commented. "That is a cool look, though."

"Yeah, I guess? Is this usual for the teacher?" Loren asked, curious. She took an empty seat, a little nervous.

“I hope it is. Also, since I haven’t really looked at the schedule, what’s the rest of our classes?”
Zuri asks. Zuri loves life science, magic, and marine biology, so she hopes the has at least one of those classes.

"Mm, I'm not sure, I'll check," she pulls out her phone and looks at the schedule. Ooh, science next. She looked up. "Science next."

"Have a seat students," the teacher boomed. But it wasn't really the teacher. It was Him. He needed something from this school to get out of his prison. Sure, it didn't seem like a prison, but every time he turned, there was yet another thing he couldn't do. He was trapped in an alternate dimension, but nobody lived there, only puppets. The crystal, he needed. And the shadows, were merely his puppets. "Let's learn about… gems! There are lots of interesting mathematical things about them…" Well, he didn't know that, for all he knew it probably wasn't true. But he had to act "normal", whatever that was before asking them about the one he wanted.

"Oh, this is going to be great." Emrys groaned, slumping into a seat at the back of the room. "This teacher is going to be one of those teachers that just talks about their life stories instead of actually doing things related to the class." Emrys scoffed. "I mean, what are we going to do with crystals?" Her eyes widen. "Oh, we'd better not be finding the surface area. If that's what we're doing, I'm going to kill someone."

He released his control on the teacher's speech and let him talk mathematical stuff. "Why yes, we're going to be learning that, and more, such as volume of various gems!" he strode over to the board and started writing some math-y stuff.

Loren groaned. Well this was just great. A teacher who flitted between topics.

"Volume?" Emrys looked at Loren and groaned. "That's almost worse. Let me tell you, if I had a knife right now…" She trailed off, letting the murderous look in her eyes do the talking for her. "Anyways." She pushed her glasses up her nose and pulled a notebook out of her backpack.

"Ah Emrys, don't just go threatening the teachers, they might throw you out of school or something, I don't know. I don't know about you, but I'd rather not get in trouble with the staff in the first place…" Loren warned.

(Don't worry, such a thing won't get her thrown out, just Loren thinking.)

"Eh," Emrys said, waving a hand vaguely. "I'll be fine. Besides, I don't think he can hear me anyways." She pulls a pencil from her backpack and starts twirling it between her fingers.

She raised an eyebrow. "If you say so…"

This is the kind of stuff that makes me want to share my talents, Zuri thinks smugly.
She wants to be doing something actually useful to her career, and finding the volume of crystals is not one of them.
“You know, I only promised I wouldn’t entrance you two… singing to get out of homework isn’t bad at all,” Zuri whispers over to the girls.

"Wait, seriously?" Emrys looked over at Zuri. "You could get us out of homework?" She grinned widely. "Honestly, if you can, that's the coolest thing ever."

Stuff like this always revealed her so-called "bad girl side". Loren smiled a mischevious smile and looked at Zuri. "Ooo that sounds awesome!"

“If we get out of homework, ya’ll just tell me the song and we can have a concert.”
Zuri scribbled down some of the last notes. It’s only halfway through the class.
UGH

"Cool." Emrys grinned and wrote down a few problems. She was good-ish at math, but finding the volume of crystals with zero reminders on volume was… difficult, to say the least. "Are any of you having any progress with these? They're kinda impossible. And just a bit advanced for the first day." Emrys whispered to the other girls. "I hate this teacher already."

"Yeah," Loren agreed.

He took control again, and told the students, "Okay now have any of you heard of the AshStar? It's an ashy-colored crystal that's found only the the northern mountains of Greenland."

Suspicious much? Zuri thinks.
Zuri raises her hand, and when the teacher calls on her expecting the answer to what He wants, she says, “No, but I was wondering… What kind of magic do you have? What’s your ability?”

The teacher turned around, and He released his control. "Controlling shadows," he answered in a pleasant voice, manipulating the shadows around him to take his shape, and releasing them after a bit.

"Huh, that's cool," Emrys said. "But, sir, I want to ask you a question. Why in the world are we finding the volume of crystals, and being asked about crystals in Greenland, when this is the first day here? Shouldn't you, you know, actually teach us about it first?" She asked, shrugging.

Nothing menacing about a little shadows, she thought.
Doesn't stop me from being suspicious.
“Or, maybe you could tell us about yourself. You know, get to know the teacher style?” Zuri asks, not bothering to raise her hand.

The teacher ignored their questions, and went on. "The AshStar is one of the largest crystals in the world. We'll be learning how to find the volume of various objects "this year and more. And over the course of the year, we'll be attempting to teach you the basics of geometry, and even touch on quadratics a bit.

“Rude,” Zuri muttered.
When am I going to need to use geometry in my life? “That coral is cylindrical. That dolphin has a large volume.” Yeah, right.
Zuri slid forward in her seat and crossed her arms.
I don’t even know what quadratics is.

"Right, of course. But shouldn't we start with, I don't know, a pyramid, or a cylinder, or even a box before we do that?" Emrys gestured at the board. "Come on, start with the basics! I'm rusty, and I'm pretty sure everyone else here is too."

The teacher crossed his arms. "Raise hands to comment, please."

Zuri raises her hand. The teacher hesitates, but calls on her.
“Shouldn’t we start with, I don’t know, a pyramid, or a cylinder, or even a box before we do *that?”
Zuri gestures at the formulas up on the board.
“Come on, start with the basics! I’m rusty, and I’m pretty sure everyone else here is too,” Zuri says in a very serious tone like she didn’t just repeat everything Emrys said.

The teacher narrows his eyes. "Alright, homework! I'm passing around a sheet of paper, this is your homework! Do not lose it, I want you to turn it in tomorrow, so make sure your names are on it!" He passes paper around. It has basic math problems on it, not hard.
