“You are literally one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.”

“I assure you that this is an exception. I tend to be… brash around others my own age.” Trent sighed.

“Well, then you’re the person who’s nicest to me.”

Trenton cracked a smile. “That’s because you don’t expect anything from me, dwarf. You’re very docile.”

“Docile?”

“Calm and kind.” He elaborated. “Not one to judge.”

“Oh.” Lydia smiled. “You need to come visit me back home. We’ll see how docile you think I am then.”

“I’m afraid I’m shipped off to Maine for boarding school right as the summer ends.” Trent’s smile faded. He hugged Lydia a little tighter.

“Thats not that far. I could catch the train and come see you.”

“Crossing state lines alone? Absolutely not. You could be putting yourself in a tremendous amount of danger.” Trent frowned.

“Because I definitely haven’t done that before.” She said sarcastically.

“Stop giving me anxiety.” Trent complained quietly. “I would prefer if you did not meet the others at the academy anyways. Especially not Finnigan.” His cheeks subtly began to grow red again after mumbling the other boy’s name.

“Finnigan?” Lydia asked, raising and eyebrow.

Trenton mumbled something so quiet that it was incoherent. He then pushed Lydia lightly. “Don’t give me that face.”

“What was that?” Lydia asked, smirking.

“He’s a friend.” Trent grumbled. “A straight one at that.”

“Ugh.” Lydia said. “Having crushes on straight people sucks.”

“It’s been years.” Trent sighed, raking his hands through his hair. “But I’m demi, you know? Not just in the god way. It’s hard to like someone I don’t know. So I’m just… stuck.”

“I get it.” Lydia said, nodding.

He let a quiet frustrated groan escape his throat. “Why can’t everyone love me? My life would be astonishingly easier.”

“Because that’s not how life works. Can’t you imagine how boring life would be if there were no conflict? If everyone loved everyone?”

“That would be a dream, dwarf. I’m rather tired of fighting.”

“True.” Lydia felt her eyes widen. “Oh dear gods I’m an idiot!”

Trenton flinched, startled by Lydia’s shout. “Is everything alright?”

“Yeah, sorry.” Lydia said, scrambling to her feet. “My brother and I have an agreement that he leaves with his friends until about 1:00, then I come and get him and we hang out. He’s going to kill me.”
