(Honestly I love how we're all so happy just chatting about classic lit to each other that we have more pages of chat than roleplay. There's what, seven or eight roleplay replies at most? But so much of just us enjoying each others opinions! And it's amazing.)

(I agree! It's nice to talk with people who share my interests as opposed to being laughed at for them)

(I would never laugh at you, for your knowledge. I like hearing about the things people like, even if I personally never have or never will understand them.)

(However, I refuse to read shakespeare. I'm sorry to everyone I know who likes shakespeare, I just can't get through all the words. I know it's better digested in play format because they're, ya know, plays, but I can't.)

(Yeah that's valid. I do a lot of theatre stuff and a lot of that is Shakespeare, so I have a pretty good grasp on his language and such.)

(I mean Robert was sailing for a while, he probably just didn't have time to cut it so we can just say we've cheated history on that one also Ice of course you can stalk just expect my Victor for this to a a bit nicer and twice as feral.)

Victor's frantic blue eyes darted around the area, and he began to tug on his hair, before getting into the carriage. "Robert, are we entirely safe here?" he asked quietly, while the creature ended up sitting up by the driver, the roof of the carriage too low for their stature. Even then, it was a tight squeeze, but now they finally had some time to read without Victor drawing too much attention to them.

They were reading Candide, ou l'Optimisme, in the original French since that was the language they'd learned originally and it was the language that would stay with them until their grave. How they'd managed to get a copy startled even them, people just had a habit of dropping books out in the woods around them, as far as they were concerned. Certainly, they were fluent in English, but had only become so by reading and listening.

"So, you're a scholar, eh?" the driver asked. This was a dangerous question, as the creature generally didn't like learned men on principle. I mean, look at Victor, the botched creation thought.

"I consider myself someone with a love of reading, but I'm no scholar." he returned, surprised at the generosity of the man's gentle demeanor towards him.

"Ah, like me wife. She en't a scholar due to the pricks at university rejecting her for bein' a woman, but I know she'll get there one day. My Laura is smarter than all'a 'em, with a big heart too."

"I'm glad to hear it. Your wife must be a very decent person." the creature said, not really knowing the social script for things.

"Oh she is, more'an anything. Say, do you have a lady love? I'm sure you due, what will all that height'n'all. Women love a tall man with brains, unlike me of course, who was lucky to get my Laura on accounting of my smaller stature and fickle intelligences." the question struck a note with the creature. He had never gotten a chance to love, owing it all to Victor for his misfortune.

(author's note: I'm genuinely sorry to call the creature such mean things.)

(also here is my latest response in case it got buried under our chats.)

Robert shrugged as he followed Victor into the carriage after making sure the small man didn't trip. "Anything could happen," he said, which probably wasn't the most reassuring thing to say, but it's something he got used to saying frequently on his adventures. "But yes, we are mostly safe here," he amended. "What exactly do we need to be safe from?"
They were moving now, the carriage jiggling as the wheels struck the cobblestone. Pedestrians stared and gawked at the creature sitting with the coachman as they passed. Robert stared out for a moment. "Pedestrians?" he suggested.
He eavesdropped on the creature and the coachman with curiosity. Only the rhythmic tapping of his foot on the floor betrayed his anxiousness to get home.

"I'm worried for us. My creation will draw too much attention. And probably get us killed if we don't get out of here quickly." he looked around, the tapping of Robert's foot only serving to make his anxiety worse. "Can we tell the driver to hurry up? I don't wish to be stuck here for much longer." he leaned on Robert, too tired to stay upright and too energetic to rest. He began playing with Robert's hair, trying to calm himself down a little as he let the carriage jostle his weak frame around. "Your hair is incredibly soft, how do you do it?" he asked, now fascinated by Robert's downy locks.

The creature mostly nodded along at the coach driver rambled, but a particular question caught him.

"Are you Russian? You seem to be, what with the height. Russians are tougher than anything, I reckoned you were Russian the moment I first saw you."

"Er, I wouldn't say that. I could be anything for all I know. I didn't ever meet anyone I'd consider a parent." he said, trying not to offer up too much information. The stares of the crowds around him sere enough to turn his stomach, but the carriage was quickly reaching the city limits, relief would come soon.

"An orphan then? Ah, so was I, so was I. Me mum died right when I was born, and me dad kicked me out when I was just a little'un, and I practically raised meself. I met my Laura soon after, insep'rable we were. Still are, although I do much more travelin' now that I have a job."

"Not exactly an orphan… it's too difficult to describe, I'd prefer not to speak of it."

"I'll allow that. A man has his secrets, needs 'em maybe. I s'pose it's no crime to keep parts of yourself hidden, but your cryptic nature is certainly something else. Are you usually this quiet?"

The creature nodded, not offering much of an answer. They were past the city, and onto the "open road", and it was a lot less stressful here now that they were in familiar territory.

(no problem dude! I'll be making some oatmeal so hopefully we'll be back around the same time.)

@Tired-but-passionate

"Ah, right," Robert muttered. "Sorry, I'm unused to attention being the biggest threat to my existence." He hoped the way he said this didn't sound too rude. He waited for a pause in the creature and coachman's conversation before leaning out the window to call, "My good sir, would you mind picking up the pace? My guests and I are anxious to get to our destination."
He felt the speed of the carriage increase with a "Right you are, sir!" said, "Thank you!" in response, then ducked his head back inside.
He let Victor lean on him and play with his hair. It reminded him of his sister, which only intensified his desire to see her. He chuckled. "I don't know. I'm honestly surprised you find it so soft."
The ride was smoother once they got dirt and dust under them instead of cobblestone. Robert blinked, furrowing his brow. "Why do you like my hair so much, anyway?"

Victor blinked, leaned into Robert some more. The man himself was soft, all over, unlike Victor who was bony and angular and had been all his life. Victor noticed that Robert smelled very strongly of saltwater, probably from sailing, yes, but Victor had done plenty of sailing and he never smelled like saltwater. "I just like you, honestly. You're like a cuddly cat, or a sheepdog. I use to see those in the mountains, they were a lot like you. Very soft and good for when you need emotional support after your friends and family died by your hand." he said, toying with Robert's hair, braiding it and unbraiding it in swift, sharp movements that seemed too alive for how dead Victor was, just as much a living corpse as the creature was at this point.

Victor stayed silent the rest of the journey, eventually dozing off and snoring slightly into Robert's arm, a little drool dribbling down his cheek. He woke once the carriage had stopped, however, right at their destination. The creature hopped off, thanked the driver, and moved to open the carriage doors for Victor and Robert. He hoped the move of respect and friendliness would be enough to get on Robert's good side.

(honestly at least Victor's sort of self-aware. I kinda imagine that before he went off to chase down the creature he just cried in the grass for a little bit because he is ever so slightly pathetic also what are your opinions of tuberculosis?)

@Tired-but-passionate

(hahaha yeahhh. TB? White death? uhhhhh idk wasn't it like, fainting lady disease? Well actually I had been thinking about if Robert's father or mother died from it some years ago)

(That does work, and it could help flesh out a good dynamic between Robert and Margaret.)
