“Sorry, sorry. I’m not great with talking to someone one-on-one,” Sterling said with a shrug.

"I'm not great at talking just in general so we're in the same boat here." She laughed.

Sterling laughed lightly with her and nudged her playfully. “All right, lets go find us some spots.”
"Yeah! People!" She cheered sarcastically.

Sterling laughed louder and grabbed her arm, careful not to hurt her with his grip. He tugged her to the right side of the clearing, veering towards the middle.
She waved to a couple of her friends as they passed by, all of which gave her a jaw dropped shocked look as they saw who she was paired with.

Sterling ignored the looks and few catcalls tossed his way. Some of those girls were just relentless, and it annoyed him quite a bit.
"Something tells me that nothing about tonight is going to be easy." She mumbled.

Sterling nodded and stopped in a fairly empty spot. “I think we can safely say that about this whole week…”
"Yeah but hopefully through the whole thing a couple of new friendships will emerge. Right?"

“I do think that’s the point of this thing,” Sterling chuckled. He let go of her arm, clearing his throat when he realized that he was still holding onto it.

She blushed bright red and looked towards the main fire.

“Though I’m sure a few enemies will be made as well, seeing as we’ll be competing against them,” Sterling mused, looking around the clearing.
"Yeah that's true." She giggled.

“I hope no one gets seriously hurt,” Sterling chuckled. “People can get violent when they want something badly…”
"Yeah, I know what that's like." She chuckled softly, only half kidding.

Sterling nodded. “Yeah… Me, too… Girls can be scary, man,” he said, chuckling again.
Gun fights are a lot scarier when you're the one pulling the trigger. She shook her head to clear the thoughts.

Sterling stared off into the distance. Flashes of memories flirted through his mind. He wasn’t one to make a girl hope for something and then not give it, but sometimes they hoped for it just from looking at him. They thought they knew what he was like, that they could get what they wanted from him easily, but he just wasn’t that way…
"Karma!" One of her friends called, making her turn suddenly. A loud tearing sound came with it and she gripped her side, wincing in pain. "Those were my stitches, oh fuck that hurts." She hissed through clenched teeth.

Sterling’s eyebrows creased as he turned to look at her, her words tearing him from his thoughts. “Stitches? What happened?”
"Gunshot wound. Long story." When she pulled her hand away, it was stained red. She'd started bleeding again.

“You know what? There’s a medical cabin around here somewhere, and we have some time before the meeting starts. I’m bringing you over,” Sterling said, grabbing her arm again and leading her away.
Any attention that wasn't on them before was definitely on them now. It's not everyday that the shy, quiet girl says she was shot.

Sterling gave the rest of the students a fierce look before he led her away. The attention was quickly put on anything other than them, some people even just staring down at their shoes.
Standing at the door of the cabin was an unamused looking nurse. "Cassandra I told you once and I'll tell you again, you have to be careful with these things. If you keep tearing them, you'll never heal." "Yeah yeah I get it Laura but a job's a job even if it kills me." Laura sighed and pulled her into the cabin. "I've got her from here, you can go back." Laura smiled at Sterling.

Sterling gave the nurse a respectful smile. “Sorry, ma’am, but she’s actually my partner for this week, so I’m supposed to stay with her until tonight.”
"Oh…alright, come on in." Cass hissed in pain, still clutching her side, blood seeping through her fingers.

Sterling nodded and stepped inside the cabin, taking a seat in one of the chairs beside the door. He didn’t really need to be with her the whole time, but he was worried about her.
Laura placed her down on a cot and lifted her shirt to check out the damage. "Yeah, that's torn alright." Her skin was riddled with scars and the most recent one was torn open and bleeding. "These gun fights will kill you, Cass." "Yes I'm well aware of what you think Laura." Cassie hissed.
