Chadine watched them quietly from the doorway, smiling sweetly. She remembered that feeling. Ah.. she ought to leave them to it.

Pierre pulled the trigger as instructed, barely flinching at the cacophonous noise that went up.

His fiancee had become stony and solid against the backfire of the rifle. Oh, how far she'd come.

He was caught between pride that she’d managed that much, and melancholy that war had hardened her so. But he tore his eyes away, inhaling deeply. Focus…

"Reload!" The line of soldiers brought their weapon down, and quickly stuffed another bullet down the neck of the rifle.

Jane smiled softly and truly relaxed for the first time in weeks.

"I need a bath," John spoke with a peeking smile.

"I can fix you one," she replied quietly.

"Will you take it with me?" John smiled.

She blinked, then her lips pulled into a smirk. "Of course."

Jane's husband ran the spong across her shoulders. "Do you know when Simcoe is due to return?" John asked tentatively.

She shook her head. "No. He comes and goes as he pleases."

"Hm. I figure I'll have to set that right, won't I?" He smiled.

"That would be appreciated," she replied softly, trailing a finger down his jaw.

John closed his eyes for a moment. "Especially if he makes my wife uneasy.."

Jane remembered his threat to her before she'd fallen ill. And what he'd heard about John… "So how is Peter?" she asked, trying to change the topic.

"Peter's…" John took an inhale, "He's doing fine."

Jane lifted her head. "Is there something wrong?" she asked innocently, having no clue what she'd just said.

"Why would there be?" John replied, "Shh, you talk too much, love."

She blushed slightly. "I'm sorry. It's just relieving that you're finally home."

He leaned to give her a satisfying kiss, resting a hand on her belly.

Jane kissed him back passionately, pouring all of her love for him into the kiss.

When she least expected it, her husband smeared a handful of bubbles across her face.

Jane gasped. "John!" she cried, dissolving into giggles.

He threw his head back in a throaty laugh. "When did you grow a beard?!"

"It was supposed to be a surprise," she laughed, playing along with him.

"Oh honey! Have I really been gone that long?" He teased.

"Yes. You need to come home more often," she said with a smile.
