"Come on!" Their sergeant yelled. hurry up, he urged; the earlier they left, the better.

Pierre inhaled deeply and pushed open the tent flap, waiting for Edonine to pass.

She scuttled outside at their sergeant's call, grasping her rifle.

Pierre followed after as they joined the rest of the men.

The regiment began to shuffle into the woods, after their general, after the British.

Pierre stuck close to Edonine’s side, afraid to let her out of his sight.

Her gaze wandered between forward and downcast. Full of dread, to say the least, at what they were walking to face.

His eyes, on the other hand, were fixed firmly on the horizon, his posture perfectly straight.

They stopped jusr on the fridge of the enemy camp. The General was taking one last survey.

"You know her much better than I," John replied, stroking her hair.

Jane hummed softly. "I'll think of something."

"Does she like jewelry?" John asked his wife.

"I don't think so. It would probably get in her way unless it was something subtle," Jane answered thoughtfully.

"Does she like pets? Would she like a cat?" He pondered aloud.

"I'm not sure," she said quietly.

"Would it ruin the surprise to ask?"

"Probably," she giggled.

"Well!" He breathed, "This is inconvenient, if I say so myself,"

"I told you that I will think of something," Jane insisted with a smile, pressing a gentle kiss to his cheek.

John was lying on the couch, with his wife on top of his chest. He rubbed lazy circles over her swollen stomach, bordering the edge of sleep while he listened to the fireplace and her breath.

Jane was boarding on falling asleep when she heard the doorbell ring. "I'll get it," she murmured, sitting up to attend to the waiting person.

Her husband sighed with gentle disappointment, "If you must…"

The most dreaded man peered back. "Hello. I'm back."

Jane withered at the sight of him. "H-Hello, Captain. Would you like me to take your coat?"

"Yes." He stepped inside, dropped it on her.

"Excuse me," John stood up, "Captain. I'm sure as a man with plenty of… Physical training, surely your coat isn't heavy enough to wear you out?"

Jane hung up the coat without a word.
