Breaking away from the line, Pierre came and crouched beside her.
"Get away," the sergeant pushed Pierre, "Who's job is it to put the boy in line?"
He clenched his jaw, but didn't move. "Yours, sir."
"Get back in line."
Pierre flinched, his gaze flickering to Edonine in askance.
Edonine looked away with a harrowed expression.

Edonine seemed a little sour all evening after that. Her arms shook with soreness, her lips taut.
“Hey,” Pierre approached her from behind, his hands in his pockets.
"Hey." She mumbled back.
Pierre exhaled slowly. “Come back to the tent, we can eat some of the pears you brought back.”
"Okay." Edonine mumbled.

He lead her over to their temporary dwelling, silent.

She kept her shoulders hunched as she trailed him.
"Hey, what's wrong?" he murmured, despite the fact that he already knew.
"Nothing." She replied.
"Come on, Edonine," he murmured, offering her a pear. "I have eyes. What's bothering you?"
"I wish you would have helped me more," she replied quietly.
A wave of guilt washed over him. "I'm sorry. I–I made the same mistake trying to help Louis a year ago. I only made things worse. I thought—" He cut himself off. "No. I'm not going to make excuses. I was wrong, and I'm sorry."
She looked at her feet, "You know he likes to mess with me."
"I know." He sighed. "I won't hold back again. I promise."
She sighed a little, and shuffled to get a hug from him.
Pierre enveloped her in his arms, pressing kisses to the top of her head. "I love you. I'm sorry."
Edonine closed her eyes. "I'm so tired of all of this,"
"I know…." he murmured, nudging his nose against her temple. "Is there anything I can do?"
She rest a hand on his chest, "I don't know.."
"I'll do anything for you. I'm sorry that I couldn't prove that today.." He ran a hand through her short hair. "You must be tired. Rest."
