Of course the scream of one of the kids Mr. Nikolas knew gripped him with cold, stattled terror, "Callie!?" He yelled brokenly, from being both torn from his thoughts and scared to death and back.
Roleplay, anyone?
Pine looked up from his feet from where he had been pacing aimlessly and searched desperately through the undergrowth for Callie, the source of the scream. "Callie!! You alright?"
Kirsten was in the middle of the forest when Callie screamed. She looked up and started running through the undergrowth, weaving through trees and jumping boulders. "Callie! Where are you? Callie!!" she shouted.
Cassie heard Callie's scream, but unfortunately couldn't do anything about it.
Callie’s screaming only seemed to anger the bear. It growled at her with ferocity. and she fell backwards in fear. The bear moved towards her slowly. She stood up, nerves shaking her. She remembered her 5th grade biology report on black bears: ”Black bears are omnivores. They eat various plants and prey. In order to eat these, they must be good swimmers and climbers. Even from being a cub, they…” Tree climbing or swimming was not an option. She couldn’t outrun a bear either. She didn’t know what to do, so she grabbed a stick and whacked its nose.
“Help me!” she yelled as she tried to find more things to hit it with.
Pine followed Callie's shrill voice through the bracken, but to no avail. "Callie! Where are you?"
Kirsten heard the second scream. She changed direction and ran towards Callie. She got to the clearing and stopped at a tree, watching as the bear advanced on Callie. She started hyperventilating, but collected herself. She scaled a tree, her boulder still in hand. She threw it at the bear, hard. Hidden in the canopy of leaves, she prayed the bear wouldn't know where she was.
The teacher seemed to have easier and faster access than the others. He recalled— quickly— that black bears were intimidated by loud noise, so he opened his mouth to yell very loudly, a foreign noise from the teacher, waving his arms to appear bigger.
Why is everyone screaming? Pine thought to himself, panicking.
Wait.
Bears hate loud noises.
"Hey!! Is it a bear?" he yelled.
No reply.
We're saying it's a bear, then.
Pine had his iPod tucked safely in his pocket but took it out and cupped it in his hands, making a makeshift megaphone, and began playing My Chemical Romance through the speakers and shrieking the lyrics to Sleep at the top of his lungs.
Through all the mayhem, Mr. Nikolas did find Pine's tactic pretty amusing.
(the one time a teacher will ever find MCR to be useful :P)

Pine crashed through the undergrowth with his emo music, following everyone else's screaming until he arrived at the edge of the clearing. "Callie, I'll distract the bear. You run to the left."
Cassie laid her head down on the ground, taking a deep breath. Her leg was set, and it was just a simple fracture, so she would heal pretty fast.
Not waiting for a reply, Pine dashed forward with his music playing on full volume and began kicking at the bear. "Leave my friend alone!!"
(mind you, this is NOT the right thing to do in this situation. :P)

River heard the black bear roar and raced towards it at full speed, knocking the boy attacking her over and into the dirt. "Are you okay?!", she said frantically, checking the bear for wounds.
