A young woman stumbled by, pulling her cardigan close around her lean, fragile body. Her dark hair was braided to the side, and her brown eyes were dull and empty. Her lips were a sickly blue color, and her skeletal fingers indicated she hadn't eaten for quite some time.
Rivian shoved his hands into his trouser pockets, pretending not to notice the woman until she walked into him.
"I-I'm sorry!" her voice cracked, and she looked up at Rivian with a terrified expression - like she was awaiting some sort of punishment from him.
The vampire offered her a sympathetic smile. "It's my fault for not looking where I was going, m'lady, you are not at fault."
She kept her head low. "Thank you, Lord Raynford."
"You know who I am?" At first Rivian was taken aback, he didn't think someone of her nature would know who he was.
"I attended your last public speaking, the one about helping the poor." Her eyes lit up a little, and a small smile curved on her lips. "I must say, you do have a very persuasive tone."
"Thank you, that means a lot coming from a beautiful woman like yourself."
The woman scoffed, shaking her head, indicating to her figure. "I am far from beautiful, my lord."
"Nonsense." Rivian carefully took one of her hands. "You put others before yourself when you yourself are struggling, you don't let harsh words faze you. That, to me, is beautiful." Of course, he didn't truly think those characteristics were completely beautiful, but the woman believed him nonetheless.
She looked up, meeting his eyes for a split second. But a split second was all it took for her to be completely relaxed.
"Now, you look starving. Would you care for some tea at my home?" Rivian asked, his deep voice smooth like silk. The woman nodded silently, and sheepishly followed him, their hands still intertwined.
They neared Rivian's car, and that's when the woman finally spoke. "I can't be too long, my lord, I need to get home to my kids at some point."
Rivian bit his lower lip, he didn't want to hear that. He turned to the woman, making sure that Arie could see him clearly. He stared deeply into the woman's eyes with a loving smile. "Don't worry, they will be with you before you know it."
He caressed the woman's cheek before his hand found her hair. He ran his fingers through her hair a couple of times while maintaining eye contact. He smiled, revealing his fangs, and quickly yanked her hair to the side, snapping her neck. She fell to the ground, a look of horror in her still open eyes that faced the car.
(Sorry it's so long)
