questionable NHCTB defector who lost sight of his goal

Akira is a pretty blunt and sarcastic member of the NHCTB's military. He mostly tends to keep his distance from his comrades and his personal matters private. When he first joined, the workings of his new position negatively affected him somewhat, being occasionally forced to take the lifes of other non-humans in dangerous situations or eventually dooming them by capturing them and handing them over to the NHCTB for research.
After spending some time with him, he proves to be rather short-tempered and intolerant towards nonsense. This might be partly due to all the years of living with the risk of being discovered as non-human at any time. When he loses his temper he tends to get short outbursts of anger, though those rather rarely result in anything serious, he mostly just snaps for a moment and then leaves the situation, being irritated.
On missions he prefers to operate independent from others and is quite reliable.

In his younger years, he was already a bit difficult and rather temperamental, but not as irritable or violent. In school he was somewhat unsociable and skipped classes a lot.
When he was faced with serious legal consequences for his actions during Vanth Ichihara's supposed arrest, he got scared and tried to lie his way out, even compromising his own principles and ending up joining the enemy for years. This later caused the resistance to be wary of letting him join and keep him unter surveillance for some time. With the resistance being his last resort as a known non-human, he no longer could return to the NHCTB or just go back to his ordinary civilian life and had to stick to one side and fight for his safety instead of throwing others under the bus for it.

During his time with the resistance and while defected he had to start facing his issues, how he pretended to be human, killed and turned in his own kind to protect himself. He even sometimes mistreated the girl he liked, unaware it was her and only really started to feel bad about it once he realized. Later she made it clear that she despised him for it.
Becoming aware of what he had done over the years, he later tried to make amends for his past by providing the resistance with NHCTB intel and his combat strength so he would have a place to go back to. He also tried to fix his relationship with Vanth Ichihara, though it will probably never go into the direction he originally wanted it to, this being a romantic one, as he had to start with basic trust.

Despite everything, he has a less rough side too. After the barrier fell and they got in contact with the primal non-humans, the male elfin Nour kissed Vanth Ichihara to demonstrate what Yasu Fujisaki did to him, due to not understanding the gesture at all. Akira, seeing this without any context, pushed him away and went off on him for just kissing a woman like that, one he himself was in love with at that. By doing so, he exposed his rather innocent romantic ideals, despite his usual demeanor.

After he was put into investigative custody during the NHCTB crackdown, he decided to plead guilty of his charges as he saw no better way out of this and to put it behind him, admitting his guilt to himself too.

Akira discovered his abilities at 13 years old while ripping apart pictures of his father after a nasty divorce from his mother, suddenly noticing they started burning in his hands due to his anger. Scared, he god rid of the evidence and didn't tell anyone or dared to use his abilities, because he heard of people like him getting arrested by the police before. Now being raised by a single mother with a low-income that was working a lot and still dealing with the aftermath of the divorce, he didn't confide in her either. Some time in high school he was mostly withdrawn from his classmates and tended to skip classes a lot. When someone provoked him, he easily started fights. At some point he developed a crush on a girl named Vanth Ichihara, who was two grades under him, because she didn't treat him different from anyone else despite his reputation. He often hung out around her in school or lingered around in other places for longer than usual if she was present, careful enough to not get noticed, contrasting with his intention of getting to know her. Once he considered following her home to talk to her, but abandoned the idea. This went on for one school year without any proper progress, until he graduated at 18 and moved into a neighboring town with his mother because she lost her job and couldn't afford the rent of their current home anymore.
For the next two years he kept doing random jobs to support him and his mother financially. This was until he walked home one evening and came across Vanth again, who seemed to be in a hurry. Not noticing, he tried to talk to her, which she dismissed. Shortly after, a plainclothes agent who was sent after her caught up and told her to stay where she is. Akira still didn't fully get what was going on, but understood that she was in trouble, thinking it was a kidnapper or thug. He quickly grabbed her hand and started running away with her. On an abandoned railway bridge outside town, the agent caught up to them again. Driven into a corner and with Vanth at gunpoint, he tried to protect her by holding onto the agents arm, but was shoved aside as he fired his gun at her. Completely taken by surprise, he saw her deflect the bullet and slash the agents arm with magic-made daggers. Not even getting any time for him to properly realize what just happened, she lost her footing and slipped off the bridge. He tried to grab her hand, but couldn't reach her in time and was left to watch her fall towards the river. Annoyed, the agent held him down to the ground and contacted his superior via radio, describing the situation and for instructions what to do with the 'interfering civilian'. Slowly coming back to his senses, Akira started to struggle, as he heard the superior ask if there are any other witnesses. Fearing for his own life, he remembered the anonymous stories on the internet about what happened to others like him. As the agent negated this, he received orders to 'just follow the usual protocol'. In a panic, Akira shouted that he just wanted to help a girl he thought was being chased by someone dangerous. If he had known about her, he would have never helped her. This was only a lie to save his own skin in hopes of them letting him go unsuspected, but the superior heard him shouting and asked what the commotion was all about. After explaining, the agent was ordered to just bring him back for questioning. Confirming the order, he handcuffed Akira, bringing him back on his feet and dragging him along, back to the edge of the town. There he was put on the backseat of a car with tinted side windows and got his hands tied to one of the seats. After the agent locked the doors and started the car, he kept persistently asking where the hell he's getting taken to until he was threatened with getting sedated for the rest of the drive if he doesn't keep his mouth shut.
As they arrived at their destination, he was escorted into a big office building, with the agent handing a report of the incident to the reception desk. After checking it, the reception clerk sent them upstairs. Waiting at a door for some time, watching several office workers and a few military personnel go in an out, finally the agent knocked and was asked to come in. There, a man looking through a lot of documents was seated on a desk in a modern looking office. The agent greeted him in a very respectful manner, handing him the report again while forcing Akira on a chair in front of the desk and then leaving the room after a wave of the man at the desk. After skimming over the report and checking something on his computer, the man then switched his attention to Akira. He introduced himself as the director general of the International counter-terrorism bureau, asked for his name and then if he was aware that attacking a goverment agent and hindering their work would have legal consequences. Akira flinched. He interrupted, shouting again that he didn't know about the girl. That she deceived him and that such dangerous individuals can't be left at large. Before he could say anymore in his defense, the director general stopped him with a rather gentle look on his face and explained that despite this, he wasn't someone to turn his back on a troubled youth who wanted to change his ways. If he wanted to join their bureau, it would be possible for all charges to be dropped. Normally, one would join the police or a similiar force and switch over later on, not commit a criminal offense. Newcomers are a possibility, but they would need to thoroughly have their background checked and go through the proper training first. Realizing that they would check him anyways due to his offenses, he hid his unease and agreed that he wanted to join.
The director general drew up a contract for him and had him sent back home to his parents with it, information material about the job and a number to contact him if he decides, to properly think about it.

After the confiscation of the NHCTB servers and records a massive crackdown on many of their members was carried out. Also the identities of any members of the resistance were ascertained and listed, causing him to get arrested and be put into investigative custody. It took the investigation division a few weeks to get concrete evidence due to Yasu Fujisaki corrupting parts of the database to buy himself time to go into hiding. But after most details of his involvement were restored, Akira plead guilty and went to prison for 3 years, as his defense lawyer considered this the best decision.
