Mathias is a man who's focused on his tasks and rarely wavers from it. Nevertheless, he is a caring person who enjoys being around others. He has a naturally dominant presence.

He wishes to survive and help if possible.
For now, however, he focusses on keeping the others alive and the group together.

He drinks, a lot. In the past this caused would steal random things he came across and liked. He still does the same thing but it can hardly be called stealing as most of it has simply been abandoned.
He tends to horde the things he stole.

He thinks he is the strongest in the group and must protect the others from dangers. In reality the others are quite capable of caring for themselves

He is good at fighting with his fists and sneaking past people without notice. His natural dominant presence also helps him controlling the whims of the other group members.

He likes to sing, very loudly and very off key. He's also learning close-up magic from Muirne and helps Kayli with her bomb preparations. On top of that, he's one of the better people for Amy to have a long while scouting.

Mathias started boxing at the age of 7 and quickly rose in the competitive leagues. When he was 15 he started hanging out with some people of a rather unpleasant group and was lulled into committing several unarmed robberies. This is when he started drinking as well.
At the age of 21, he became more serious about his boxing career and got his life back on tracks by leaving the group of 'friends' he had. Sadly, he stayed an heavy drinker and eventually got submitted to a mental hospital in order to help him recover. After a few fights, that may not have been his fault, and relocations he ended up at Morrowbay asylum where he met Q. The two had a room next to each other and quickly became friends.

Yes, eventually he'll come to realise his idea of normal/ perfect are vastly different from that of his friends and he'll have to change his wishes

Mathias is aware that his normal life may never come as long as he hangs around with these people, but his stubbornness and unwillingness to accept it are making things difficult.

Well, he's willing to smash his way through hordes of zombies in order to keep the others from dying. He isn't to willing to die himself though

(perfect future to him= living in a city with his friends only a few blocks away, having a normal well paid job, going to the bar together and movie nights with popcorn)

Mathias wants to return to a normal happy life with the people he calls friends, currently meaning the crazy people

All he wants is a normal life, but that is damn difficult in an apocalyptic world ravaged by zombies and a bunch of friends that try to kill everything. He's constantly frustrate at Muirne building some random object, Brandon picking fights with everyone, Kaily singing all the time or endangering everyone with her newest chemical bomb, Amy running off after a squirrel and Q whose fueling their behaviour by encouraging them

while Mathias was with the group of delinquents, age 15 to 21, he supposedly met Q somewhere and already forged a mutually respecting relationship back then. Q remains silent on the subject and Mathias misses a few memories due to his frequent state of being blackout drunk.
