Serena gets very still and tries to control her breathing while singing lines from her favorite songs in her head. If that doesn't work, she clasps her hands in front of her. It's not super obvious to observers but it helps her calm down.

Serena is a naturally aggressive person, refusing to give up to anyone. If she wants something, she's determined to get it, and nothing will stand in her way. Her parents' behaviors and attitudes have greatly shaped who she is, and she's learned to be manipulative and use people for her own gain. That's not to say that there aren't people she genuinely cares about, like her sister and brother, who she's very protective of. She projects as a Commander personality type, but is really the Architect Personality(INTJ-A / INTJ-T)--introverted and closed off from others.

Serena started modeling at age six (even younger than Adeline) and has always felt the immense pressure to be better than those around her. Though not a people-pleaser, she did her best to do everything her parents wanted and achieve what they expected of her. But now, after all of her father's schemes, she's getting tired of it all and just wants a break from everyone and everything.

She has never been romantically interested in anyone. Even her relationships are fake, staged by her father for publicity. So as far as she is concerned, there really isn't such a thing as love.

Serena has a better relationship with her mother than with her father. She and her father are barely even on speaking terms at this point, as she is tired of him controlling her life.

Moments to show her good side:

Serena visits the shelter after hours and is cleaning out the kennels of sick dogs (when she gets the news that the attack on Adeline had not been successful)

Despite her own tiredness, lack of sleep, and overall stress preparing for an upcoming runway show, she stays up all night with Ava who is sick with the flu and vomiting. This is when she tells Ava she just wants to make life as easy and as pain-free for her as possible so she won't have to suffer as Serena did with depression, anxiety, and anorexia. This is also when she promises Ava that the Killingsworth's betrayal will not go unpunished. Ava is too sick to even respond, and Serena gently brushes her hair back and kisses her forehead, telling her it's going to be okay.

Moments to show her vulnerability:

Scene of Chapter 8.1 (prologue from Serena's point of view) we see how she has to pretend to be someone else and how much she hates it and a lot of the fakeness around her

When Adeline is coming back into the public eye with a boom (via coverage of the attack scandal, charity concert, documentary interview, etc.) and Serena and her father get into a fight. It is during this fight that her father once again compares her to Adeline and tells Serena she needs to be smarter, faster, always one step ahead, etc. He yells at her that she's a Craybon and needs to act like it. As Serena has been compared to others by her parents her entire life and only had the negative things about her and her career pointed out, she gets extremely upset. However, she manages to control her emotions long enough to tell her father that his opinions of her no longer matter to her and that he should start worrying about his own life (not hers.) Then she goes to a hole-in-the-wall cafe and hides away in a dimly lit booth in the back and just cries all by herself. This is an important scene as it shows a lot of her motivation and why she thinks and acts the way she does.

Moments to show why she's so formidable:

She is the one who planted the drugs in Adeline's backpack without any hesitation whatsoever

She sent hitmen to kidnap Adeline, sedate her, and leave her in a half-flooded warehouse

Later tries to actually take Adeline out of the picture altogether

FURTHER NOTES:

Serena feels trapped in her current life and finds her escape through daydreaming and animals.

Her entire view of life and people is skewed by the fakeness of her parents and the people around her who force her to live a lie. And since everyone around her is so fake, she is not emotionally invested anyone and the only person she is truly close to is Ava. She is emotionally shut off and isolated, not even opening up to her younger sister because she doesn't want to burden Ava with her struggles. She wants Ava to have a better and easier life than she's had.

She doesn't know how to behave without pressure or people watching her, because that's all she's ever known. And without expectations of what she should be, because she's never been allowed by herself or others to discover who she really is.

She's very detail-oriented in her day-to-day life because everyone is watching...she loves attention but hates being around a lot of people. So she's constantly the center of attention while hating herself for it the entire time.
