Smiles a lot, fiddles with his earrings, chews on his lip when nervous. He also tends to flinch when there is a sudden, unexpected movement, and dislikes when people stand behind him where he can't see them.

He sees the good in humanity, and he wants nothing more than for everyone else to see it too. He will do anything to keep others out of harms way, and even if someone has harmed him (physically or mentally) he will do everything in his power to redeem their character.

Naive, finds it hard to confront others, somewhat suspicious of new acquaintances, even though he wants to believe that they're good in his heart, he struggles with trust of people that he hasn't known for a long time because of what happened to him when he was little. Despite this distrust however, if enough time is spent trying to make feel comfortable around a new person, he will latch onto the idea that they are safe and trust-worthy because he doesn't totally understand the concept of trickery, hence being naive.

AFTER WAR BEGINS:
Naivety is gone. His new flaws are irritability, emotional numbness, ruthlessness.

Arrogance and selfishness/greed. He hates when people think that they are above others, or when they take more for themselves instead of sharing and being kind to those in need.

He worked small-jobs to get money for his travels and didn't get an official job until years later when he finally settled down and inherited the governor position from his father.

He didn't get to go to school, so his mother educated him mostly by books at a young age.

Shirai, son of the governor of the Northern Sector, was an active, social little boy who new just about everyone local. He spent the majority of his time with his cousin Elia (who insisted upon being called Eli, because she hated the name Elia), or once/twice a year sailing to faraway lands with his father for trade.
At the age of ten however, he was attacked by someone that he considered to be a mentor, friend, and a non-blood-related uncle, and driven out of his home by this strange attack, which left him permanently scarred and with a perpetual sense of distrust. He was found (bleeding and unconscious) by a boy named Kesshoku that he knew in the Northern Sector, who had also run away because he was the son of the attacker; and a girl named Ikari from Hahnriah, a land many days from Corelskah (the home of the Northern Sector of Meer Mensen). The three of them kept away from Meer Mensen for fear of being hunted down by their common enemy, who they (eight years of traveling and living like vagabonds together later) discover was caught only for a short amount of time after the attack, only to escape and disappear into the lands with no trace to follow. Everything else is present time in the story.
